    The astrakhan coat

A nameless protagonist tells the story of his life in post-war Paris in the first person. Drawn to France and its capital, seen as a Mecca to which every man should make a pilgrimage in his life, the forty-year-old from Luino, on Lake Maggiore, goes to the shadow of the Eiffel Tower without a specific plan, seeking opportunities to change his life or at least adventures to tell people about when he returns to Italy. The man manages to convince a widow, Mrs. Lenormand, to rent him a room in her house, but he has to share it with the cat Domitien, who has no intention of leaving the room. The woman, at first hesitant and shy, gradually begins to get used to his presence and relates to him episodes of her life and that of her son Maurice who appears to have abandoned her to go and live in Indochina. The resemblance between Maurice and the young Italian, both physical and in terms of affinity of soul, strikes Mrs. Lenormand to the point that during the winter she decides to give him some of her son's clothes, including an Astrakhan coat, in the style of the Russian fashion at the time of the Tsars. At the same time, the protagonist begins to date a girl named Valentine, but one day she gets upset when she sees him wearing the coat, which reminds her of the one that belonged to a past love of hers. Piero Chiara writes a novel with a European feel. Despite starting from the places close to his heart, where most of his novels are set, it moves to the French capital, where the protagonist, perhaps partly an autobiographical character, tries to find a broader horizon than that of the quiet Italian province. The author also retraces the places of his life on the pages of the Pirelli Magazine, in which he publishes two articles: “La sponda magra” (The lean shore) in 1952, in which he describes a spring trip on the shores of Lake Maggiore, and “Valsolda piccolo mondo” (Valsolda small world) in 1962, in which he tells of a visit to the Lombard valley between Lakes Como and Lugano, following in the footsteps of Antonio Fogazzaro.

    The King in Yellow

A cursed book, which unleashes madness in those who read it and spreads like a pestilence, despite attempts at censorship. The protagonist is the King in Yellow, dressed in rags, who reigns over the dark city of Carcosa, over which twin suns shine. This fictional theatrical work is the leitmotif of the first four stories that make up the "real" book, "Il Re Giallo" by Robert W. Chambers, an author who has renewed the Gothic genre and laid the foundations for twentieth-century horror literature, starting with Howard Phillips Lovecraft who recognises his influence in particular for the invention of the "Necronomicon". In more recent times, the book has also been the source of inspiration for the first season of the famous TV series "True detective", written by Nic Pizzolatto, whose success led to the printing of new editions of the collection, forgotten for many years. The work is a collection of ten stories set between America and Paris in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (a futuristic twentieth century since the work was published in 1895), dreamlike and macabre stories that speak of homicidal impulses, mysterious prophecies, disturbing dreams, love affairs and wars. Cosmic horrors and existential fears, capable of making even the contemporary reader shudder, more than a hundred years later.   Il Re Giallo (The King in Yellow) Robert W. Chambers Vallardi, 2014

    The Fade Out

Hollywood in the late 1940s. The golden age of the noir genre, in print and on the silver screen. Charlie Parish is a screenwriter struggling with his inner ghosts; he is suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome after his return from the battlefields of World War II. After a party, Charlie wakes up in a room and finds the lifeless body of Valeria Sommers, a great film diva and his friend. He had been drunk the night before and cannot remember what happened. The affair haunts him and he decides to investigate, digging deeper and deeper into a world that hides a myriad of murky secrets behind the glossy image of a 'dream factory’. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips return to revisit the noir genre (after the beautiful Criminal and Sleeper), taking inspiration from literary masters such as Raymond Chandler and James Ellroy and films such as Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard. Phillips' digital drawings masterfully render the dark atmosphere of the story, with excellent use of black that seems to envelop the characters. The comic book is also full of quotations and references to the world of cinema, which begin as early as the title (Fade Out in English), with which each story in the miniseries opens.

    Small fry

In Alessandro Robecchi's latest novel, 'Pesci piccoli', we again come across Carlo Monterossi, the TV author and detective who started the successful saga, recently adapted for TV in the series 'Monterossi', produced by Palomar. His co-stars, to whom readers have grown attached over the years, are also back and in this new adventure they find themselves dealing with unimportant characters: the marginalised people of a Milan that is increasingly becoming a city for the rich. The small fry. They are not experienced criminals with organised plans and the ability to earn a fortune, but ordinary people who often struggle to survive as they balance low wages and pressing expenses. People who, when they find an opportunity to earn something, take it in the hope of improving their lives, but then get caught up in situations that are bigger than themselves. We also meet with Ghezzi and Carella again, the policemen who work through the petty cases left on their desks, mostly petty crimes committed by poor people living on the streets; and we find the two investigators from Sistemi Integrati, Oscar Falcone and Agatina Cirielli, who, together with Carlo, attempt to investigate a theft that cannot be reported to the police. Finally, of course, we have the colourful Flora De Pisis, the queen of junk TV always ready to dig up some dirt, who is preparing to be in an episode of 'Crazy Love' dedicated to a priest who is not a priest and a miraculous crucifix, which are found in a small village in the Milanese hinterland where a crowd of believers gather. A bitter noir novel that, as we are used to seeing in Robecchi’s novels, continues to describe a city full of contradictions, made up of glittering lights but also dark shadows, in which 'you need a lot of losers to keep the myth of the winning city alive'.

    Revolting Rhymes

Imagine Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White become BFFs, and then Jack, who everyone knows for having traded a cow for a bean, falls madly in love with his neighbour Cinderella. Imagine then that the cleverest of the three little pigs has become nothing less than a banker and that Prince Charming - if the truth be told - is not quite so “charming” after all. What fairy tales would we end up with? Roald Dahl is ready and more than willing to give us a hint. Revolting Rhymes is a 1982 collection of comic nursery rhymes, written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. A book in which the most extravagant author of children's literature transforms, overturns and reinvents some famous traditional fables and fairy tales (such as Cinderella, Snow White, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs) and the stories of their protagonists with ironic and often surprising results. The verses that come to life on the page seem whispered in the ear of the young reader “by a tiny devil” who enjoys distorting the originals (or perhaps recounting for the first time those truths that adults have never wanted children to know). The plots are thus full of unscrupulous female protagonists, endowed with sharp wit, intelligence and common sense, but also host the weaving of different stories, fun and unexpected crossovers, stories in which the characters rebel and changes direction, moving away from the endings “already written” for them. The new endings, proposed by the author, will be far from ordinary: comedic, suspenseful, adventurous and — why not? — even a little bit horror. All in a game of style — Roald Dahl’s own inimitable one, cleverly translated by Roberto Piumini — in which turning things upside down, pranks and persuasion merge with plot twists, macabre traits and dark humour. On the other hand, did you really believe in 'happy ever afters'?

Girls with Numbers. Stories, passions and dreams of five female ...

The woman in the book include: Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in the world to go into space; Jane Goodall, ethologist, considered the only human being ever accepted by a community of wild chimpanzees; Rita Levi Montalcini, who was able to continue her work despite being a victim of racial persecution, paving the way for new treatments for many diseases; Maryam Mirzakhani, the first (and only female) Iranian mathematician to win the Field Medal; the scandalous Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr, the 'most beautiful woman in the world', who developed the technology behind modern wireless networks; British chemist Rosalind Franklin, who was the first person to photograph the DNA molecule. And then, anthropologist Margaret Mead, who demonstrated how environment and culture influence our lives; Tu Youyou from China, who won the battle against malaria (and a Nobel Prize) with her medicinal herbs; Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who made key contributions to US space research and the fight for equality by demonstrating through her own work and skills how skin colour has nothing to do with scientific background. There are fifteen biographies in Ragazze con i numeri, collected with care, precision, clarity of content and narrative expression. Fifteen stories of courage, determination, victories over prejudices and struggles to make their way in a world dominated by men with tenacity, intelligence, perseverance and competence. A chapter is dedicated to each of them, introduced by a monochrome portrait sketched by Giulia Sagramola, which plays on the expedient of dialogue and thoughts imagined by the harmonious writing of Vichi De Marchi (in red) and Roberta Fulci (in blue). A timeline accompanies the text, giving the reader an overview of the historical period in which the women scientists lived: from the 17th centuryof German naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian to the present time of Maryam Mirzakhani, the Iranian mathematician who passed away recently. A read suitable for both girls and boys, and for readers of all age groups. Because change and battles for gender equality have no age or gender.

    I talk like a river

Every morning when he wakes up, words appear on his lips. Words that get tangled in his throat. And what the child knows for sure is that it will be a new day of silence at school. At the back of the class, he always hopes that he will not be called on to answer, but when the teacher calls him to speak, everything gets twisted again and the eyes of his classmates laugh as they watch him stutter. And then, a quiet place: the course of the river chosen by his father to dispel anger and tears. And it is the ever-moving water that his father shows him that makes him realise that he speaks just like a river. In I Talk Like a River, Jordan Scott and Sydney Smith give voice to a moving, poetic, at times dramatic story centred on the ability to overcome difficulties (in this case a stutter). However, it would be reductive to say that it only deals with these topics. It talks about diversity, resilience, human relationships, parenting and the relationship between man and nature, which is often a lifeline in the most difficult days but also a game of mirrors that human beings should learn - or re-learn - to recognise and observe. And so it is that the river talks in the same gurgling, tumultuous, swirling and disruptive way as the young protagonist. In the book's forty-four pages, the illustrations accompany the reader at a slow pace and at times, like the child's words, broken up or - on the contrary - dilated in a silence that expresses their absence, or his attempt to overcome the resistance to express himself caused by his stuttering.

    Poison for Breakfast

Betrayals, conspiracies, suspicious fires. Over the course of his long and ambiguous career, Mr. Snicket has investigated many crimes and mysteries. But he had never imagined that he would have to investigate his own death. Nor that he would have to do so while he was still alive. And yet, he has stumbled upon this "case" – his own case – right there in front of his nose, served up on a plate for breakfast. And now all he can do is retrace the events and the journey that "Tea: with honey: a piece of toast: with cheese,: one sliced pear,: and an egg perfectly prepared" made to reach his table and poison him. This is how Lemony Snicket's last day on earth begins and it is the cue for his reflection on how knowing that one is living one’s last moments reveals the true essence, the most intimate desires and the most hidden fears of each of us. Poison at Breakfast is different from the other books written by Mr. Snicket. You could call it a "philosophical crime novel": The protagonist, in fact, warns us right from the start that we are about to read a book whose real intent is not to advance a more or less compelling plot (depending on the readers’ tastes), but to investigate and try to unveil the workings of the human mind, by highlighting its mechanisms of association and digression. However, there are plenty of the characteristics that have consecrated him as a writer of worldwide success: the cynicism, the anecdotes, the element of surprise, the turning point, the exact moment when everything is questioned and takes a different direction... and with Lemony Snicket, you know, it certainly won't be something positive.

John Fante was born in Denver on 8 April 1909 and died in Los Angeles on 8 May 1983. Fante achieved success with the series of books dedicated to the character of Arturo Bandini, his alter ego, the most famous of which is 'Ask the Dust'. Bandini, a scrappy Italian-American wannabe writer who engages in odd jobs, is a megalomaniac, a shameless and intolerant character who constantly attacks convention with biting irony.

Raymond Thornton Chandler was born in Chicago on July 23, 1888 and died in La Jolla, California, on March 26, 1959. Chandler was a writer and screenwriter, and is remembered for refining the “hard boiled” genre, born in the 1920s with the novels of Dashiell Hammett and much more realistic than the crime novel of those years. The protagonist of most of his novels is detective Phillip Marlowe, remembered for his portrayals on the silver screen by great actors, including Humphrey Bogart in “The Big Sleep” in 1946.

Spring begins on 21 March and, like every year, it is also the date on which World Poetry Day is celebrated. The event was established in 1999 by UNESCO, which assigns this literary genre a privileged role in promoting linguistic diversity, dialogue and intercultural understanding. To celebrate it, we propose an article published in the Pirelli house-organ “Fatti e Notizie” (Facts and News) in 1962: “Contemporary Italian poetry”.
