Investing in knowledge\u00a0 is a task for institutions and businesses,\u00a0 but on deeper reflection, it is a task for all of us. Knowledge is fostered not only through major national and international projects, but also through the desire of each individual to learn and understand. Knowledge for everyone, then. This issue also affects the economic and productive system,\u00a0 and is a defining feature of any sound manufacturing culture.<\/p>\n

Knowledge lies at the heart of Maria Chiara Carrozza\u2019s thinking. A professor of bioengineering at the University of Milan-Bicocca, she has held research and leadership roles at numerous institutions. Her book, \u2018Quanto vale la conoscenza.\u00a0 Cinque lezioni per la ricerca del futuro\u2019 (The value of knowledge. Five lessons for the future of research), has just been published.<\/p>\n

In an era defined by artificial intelligence, global crises, and extraordinary scientific progress, Carrozza’s book encourages us to reflect on the significance of investing in research and knowledge in the present day. The answers provided draw on the author\u2019s extensive experience as a researcher, manager, and influential figure within institutions.<\/p>\n

The book is divided into five chapters:\u00a0 the fundamental nature of research; the relationship between research, politics and institutions; the issues of talent and freedom; the importance of relationships; and education and training in the age of artificial intelligence. The book offers a thorough examination of the future of research as a public good and academic freedom. It also emphasises the importance of forward-looking policies that can attract talent and foster robust and inclusive knowledge ecosystems.<\/p>\n
