Investing in knowledge to strengthen the competitiveness of Italy (and, by extension, Europe) and its economic and social development. This is the strategic vision that is increasingly placing the onus on the government, institutions, political, economic and social forces, and educational and cultural bodies. Greater human intelligence<\/strong> is needed to shape and govern AI processes. Likewise stronger links between technology, the humanities and scientific knowledge, and a robust corporate culture that goes beyond an increasingly sophisticated ‘techne’ to hold together ‘Kultur’ and ‘Zivilisation’<\/strong> \u2014 spiritual and moral values alongside material and technical progress.<\/p>\n

In short, a ‘polytechnic culture’<\/strong> (as theorised within a multinational such as Pirelli for years) as a synthesis of humanism and science, with the human person at the centre of production processes driven by increasingly sophisticated techniques. Knowledge is precisely what is needed: rich, sophisticated and progressive. A new ‘industrial humanism’<\/strong>, and now a ‘digital’ one, is being built on the principles of ‘learning to learn’, and is underpinned by a constant dialogue between the historical roots of economic and production processes and a consistent commitment to innovation.
\nThese are the hallmarks of the very best of ‘Made in Italy’, transcending the simplistic clich\u00e9 of ‘traditional and characteristic’. And they can be found in cutting-edge sectors such as robotics, avionics, mechatronics, automotive and chemical industries, precision pharmaceuticals and plant engineering, which can compete with the best in the world.<\/p>\n

Museums and corporate historical archives<\/strong> (which are finally attracting the attention of the most industrially advanced regions, such as Lombardy, as well as Parliament, which has introduced a bill to extend the benefits of the Art Bonus) provide exemplary evidence of this. They enable us to construct a new, improved narrative of Italian industry, giving substance to the \u2018thinking hands\u2019 slogan and the need to link \u2018know-how\u2019 with \u2018sharing knowledge\u2019, as was evident at last year’s Corporate Culture Week organised by Confindustria and Museimpresa.<\/p>\n

This path also leads back to the primacy of knowledge.<\/p>\n

A primacy that is now more culturally relevant than ever, as evidenced by the recent Nobel Prize in Economics awarded to Joel Mokyr<\/strong>, Professor of Arts and Sciences, Economics, and History at Northwestern University in Chicago, as well as Professor of Economics at Tel Aviv University. His research focuses on the relationships between culture, economic development and social prosperity. For those wishing to learn more, Mokyr’s latest book, written with Guido Tabellini<\/strong> (vice-president of Bocconi University in Milan) and Avner Greif<\/strong> (a professor at Stanford), is highly recommended: \u2018Due strade verso la prosperit\u00e0 \u2013 Mille anni di cultura e istituzioni in Europa e in Cina\u2019<\/strong> (Two paths to prosperity: a thousand years of culture and institutions in Europe and China), published in Italy by Bocconi University Press.<\/p>\n

The central thesis is well argued and documented throughout the book’s 630 pages. It begins with historical differences from the 11th century onwards, a backward, poor Europe<\/strong> and a rich, sophisticated Chinese civilisation, before examining the European turning point from the 16th century onwards: the Renaissance, technical progress, Descartes, the Enlightenment, the primacy of reason and science, and industrialisation, right up to the present day.<\/p>\n

During exactly the same period, China<\/strong> shut itself away within a system dominated by a conservative, family-based bureaucracy, and autocracy long stood in the way of innovation. Fast forward to the present day, however, and the situation has once again changed: Europe is in crisis, with its institutional, social, and economic models under strain, and public spending increasingly tied to the welfare state. Meanwhile, China is embracing innovation, even though its economic and social fabric is showing signs of strain.<\/p>\n

Re-examining history helps us to understand the origins of current processes. It also forces us to reflect on the relationship between culture, institutions, social values, and the development of production technologies. These are precisely the issues that Europe should address soon with an innovative and forward-looking approach, following the guidelines set out in the Draghi and Letta plans. So many people talk about these plans, yet no one is taking steps to implement them.<\/p>\n

By Reading Mokyr, Tabellini, and Grief’s book, we can rediscover the breadth of a culture that is highly relevant to us today. As we tackle the challenges posed by China and the US, we must seek to construct an original AI paradigm that suits our culture and needs, not only economically and productively, but also socially and ethically. The Church\u2019s increasingly focused and sophisticated attention demonstrates how awareness of the importance of scientific research is gaining new momentum.<\/p>\n

The night of science \u2018is clear,\u2019 Galileo Galilei<\/strong> had the courage to reiterate, even after the recantation he had been forced to make by Church authorities. A Church which, in recent times, has at last begun to engage in original dialogue with the scientific world and encourage progress. Precisely in the name of individuals and a better future for them. Knowledge<\/strong>, indeed.<\/p>\n

It is also indispensable to industry and the economy. The increasingly frequent and intensive exchanges between businesses and universities (including between Confindustria and the Conference of Rectors \u2013 Il Sole 24 Ore, 24 July) and the growing technical and scientific collaboration indicate that the path we have embarked upon, one of research, innovation and productivity, must be pursued with even greater commitment. Just as it is worth preparing both businesses and schools for the challenges posed by long-term training. Lifelong learning<\/strong> enables millions of workers to keep pace with radical changes in the world of work, and acquire the essential skills and knowledge to avoid being left behind.<\/p>\n

At stake are the protection of our prosperity<\/strong> and the democracy<\/strong> in which we have grown up and lived. The foundations of this democracy are showing alarming signs of strain.
\nIt is a cultural, political and economic challenge. This involves time spent on study and work, as well as rebuilding the cultural infrastructure and improving the thinking skills of millions of ‘functionally illiterate’<\/strong> Italians (around 30 per cent of adults aged 30\u201360 cannot understand a simple text or solve a basic maths problem). This would empower people to boost productivity and raise awareness of the problems we face in our daily lives, politics and society.<\/p>\n

Another key challenge is to increase the number of graduates and enhance their scientific literacy. A further challenge is to transform the way we teach and learn. According to the speech given a few days ago by Sergio Mattarella, the President of the Republic<\/strong>, to a group of students at the Politecnico di Milano (Corriere della Sera, 12 May): \u2018Making mistakes is valuable; find your own path\u2019. This is the same lesson taught by Karl Popper<\/strong>: that science progresses through \u2018trial and error\u2019. ‘In praise of error’, Chiara Saraceno comments in La Stampa (12 May) that \u2018to educate well means leaving room for doubt and for attempts to find a solution, a fragment of truth. Because without curiosity and the desire to try, there will never be innovation\u2019.<\/p>\n

This is a lesson that we can also learn from corporate culture<\/strong>, and it is one that the judicious use of AI<\/strong> enables us to explore in greater depth over a short period of time. It is true that knowledge takes time, but it also requires swiftness, notwithstanding the references to the power and creativity of human thought.<\/p>
