The original factory has become the location of the <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Universit\u00e0 Statale<\/span> and, where there were once vulcanisers and production machinery, today there are piazzas and modern office blocks. New roads have been opened and many small roads within the development are today city streets with busy traffic. Only the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/disegni-e-manifesti\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-OA0001-0000003458\/cartello-l-allestimento-del-museo-storico-industrie-pirelli-9.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22query%22:%22Borgo%20Pirelli%22,%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20,%22archiveName_string%22:%22pirellixDamsOA001%22}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Borgo Pirelli<\/span><\/a>, built in the <strong>1920s<\/strong> as a <strong>housing estate for employees<\/strong>, has remained virtually intact and the starting point for a short walk between the Bicocca of yesterday and the Bicocca of today.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Borgo Pirelli is still confined within the corner between viale Sarca and via Emanueli, which in those times however was still called <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">via Rodi<\/span>. It was given the new name as late as <strong>1971<\/strong> to commemorate the death in 1959 of the engineer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivistapirelli.org\/en\/selezione_antologica\/emanueli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luigi Emanueli<\/a><\/strong> who for forty years was the true brains behind <strong>research and development<\/strong> at Pirelli. The small houses in art nouveau style are grouped around the so-called <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Casone<\/span> (literally \u201cbig house\u201d or also \u201cbarn\u201d or \u201cbarracks\u201d), the large four-storey building which in the past housed<strong> local shops<\/strong>, from the grocer\u2019s to the greengrocer\u2019s and butcher\u2019s. The current bar and tobacconist\u2019s which looks out onto via Emanueli has been there for ninety years&#8230;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">During our walk to the University we then proceed along via Emanueli, towards <strong>Greco railway station<\/strong>, passing on the right that which was once the <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Segnanino <\/span><strong>industrial area<\/strong>. The factory of <strong>Azienda Articoli Tecnici<\/strong> once stood there, gravitating around <strong>Fabbricato 184<\/strong>, which in the 1990s was the first embryo of the University. At the traffic lights we turn left into the wide and tree-lined <strong>viale Piero e Alberto Pirelli<\/strong>, between the shops and bars and restaurants of piazza della Trivulziana and the ultra-modern apartment block of piazza dei Daini. We are now in that which was once <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">via n\u00b013<\/span>, among the tyre finishing departments and the tracks of the internal railway, with even a puffing locomotive&#8230;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Towering above us is the massive <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">cooling tower<\/span>, built in <strong>1950<\/strong> in order to recycle the process steam. Today it is \u201cboxed in\u201d and protected inside the large grey cube which we can see on the left &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/event\/industrial-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Headquarter 1<\/strong><\/a>, Pirelli group headquarters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">We\u2019re there \u2013 here\u2019s the last orange-coloured block with its <strong>overhead walkways<\/strong> which dominate the entrance, the long rows of large windows with white frames and the words in large letters <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u201cUniversit\u00e0 degli Studi di Milano Bicocca\u201d<\/span>. This is the <strong>torre (or tower)<\/strong> <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">U6<\/span>, built from the historic <strong>buildings 45 and 66<\/strong>, which in the company\u2019s past has always represented the strategic location of Pirelli Pneumatici in Italy and overseas. The buildings at that time were obviously not orange but a very natural \u201cpale factory yellow\u201d and the glazing of the walkway was set in a dense forest of ivy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p id=\"\">Going up the ramp towards the entrance to the Faculty of Psychology, we try for a moment to imagine the monumental <strong>piazza dell\u2019<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Ateneo Nuovo,<\/span> crowded with factory workers and production machinery and long rows of workstations for the control and finishing of tyres.
