He was from Novi Ligure and, from when he was just a little boy, he would see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1952_2.html?q=Novit%C3%A0%20nel%20ciclismo%20italiano&amp;start=42&amp;lang=en#page\/42\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Milano-Sanremo<\/strong><\/a> and the <strong>Giro d\u2019Italia<\/strong> passing by. When<strong> Giovanni Cervi<\/strong> beat him in the sprint through the Ravenna pinewoods, he was already a twenty-year-old professional, Italian Champion, winner of two stages of the Giro, and winner of the Rome-Naples-Rome Gran Fondo race the previous year. True, he had not yet become the \u201cCampionissimo\u201d but being <strong>\u201cIl Gira\u201d<\/strong> was enough for him to enter the sights of the great teams. Certainly those of <strong>Bianchi<\/strong>. And then those of <strong>Stucchi<\/strong>, which in 1921 was the <strong>\u201cStucchi-Pirelli\u201d<\/strong>. Wearing the jersey of the Milanese workshop \u2013 sewing machines, bicycles, motor tricycles \u2013 set up by <strong>Giulio Prinetti and Augusto Stucchi<\/strong>, \u201cIl Gira\u201d won the <strong>Milano-Sanremo<\/strong> in April <strong>1921<\/strong>, and immediately went on to win the first four stages of the Giro d\u2019Italia. On the fifth, in Abruzzo, he had a catastrophic collision with other cyclists. Legend has it that, with his eyes on Castel di Sangro, he traced out a cross on the dusty road, bellowing out that \u201cGirardengo stops here!\u201d. In the end, the race was won by his arch rival <strong>Giovanni Brunero<\/strong> of Legnano.<\/p>\n<p>After Bianchi and Stucchi, he again crossed paths with Pirelli. It was now in 1925-6 and he was wearing the jersey of <strong>Wolsit<\/strong>, the Italian licensee of the English Wolseley. Aged thirty-two, Girardengo felt more the Campionissimo than ever. He snapped up two more Milano-Sanremos, once again ahead of Brunero in \u201925, beating <strong>Nello Chiaccheri<\/strong> of <strong>Legnano<\/strong> the following year. He also secured another Italian Championship in \u201925, bringing his total to nine. Then, of course, there was the Giro d\u2019Italia, but this is where the first creaks began. In the Giro that started on 16 May 1925, his six stage victories were not enough for him to keep the <strong>pink jersey<\/strong> all the way to the end: a young fellow from Cittiglio, in the province of Varese, had popped up. A young fellow who had returned to Italy from Nice, where he had worked as a stuccoist, to race with Legnano \u2013 and who won the Giro ahead of the Campionissimo. A young fellow by the name of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1951_3.html?q=Binda%20parla%20del%20Gran%20Premio&amp;start=27&amp;lang=en#page\/26\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alfredo Binda<\/strong><\/a>, whose bond with Pirelli would turn out to be even longer than Girardengo\u2019s. The creaks became cracks in the<strong> 1926 Giro<\/strong>, with just two stages won and withdrawal half-way through. Ahead of him was not Binda but, worse still, his all-time enemy Brunero, backed up by the young fellow from Cittiglio for a Legnano duo on the last stretch.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-FT0001-0000000362\/il-ciclista-costante-girardengo-insieme-enzo-ferrari-e-ai-piloti-della-scuderia-ferrari.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22query%22:[%22Ferruccio%20Testi%22,1931],%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">photo<\/a> in the Pirelli Historical Archive, among countless others, taken by <strong>Ferruccio Testi<\/strong> in October <strong>1931<\/strong> in which we see Girardengo. It\u2019s in Modena. The now former Campionissimo is in his <strong>Fiat 509<\/strong> with Alessandria registration plates. Standing nearby is Enzo Ferrari. Behind him, frowning as always, is <strong>Tazio Nuvolari<\/strong>, and next to him<strong> Eugenio Siena<\/strong>, the <strong>Alfa Romeo<\/strong> test driver who is carefully studying matters. We like to think that he, the Campionissimo of cycling, has come to pay tribute to the Campionissimi of the accelerator \u2013 hardly of the brake \u2013 of the new-born <strong>Scuderia Ferrari<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is what our Historical Archive has to say about Costante Girardengo, the Pirelli cyclist.
