The opportunities offered by having the camera explore production departments and reveal them to the outside world were the subject of much debate in the second half of the twentieth century. Pages and pages devoted to \u201cfactory stories\u201d, as seen through the eyes of the great photographers of the time, appeared, for example, in\u00a0<em>Pirelli<\/em>\u00a0magazine. Other documents in our Historical Archive also show how work and workers were captured by photographers\u2019 lenses very early on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luca Comerio<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/historical-archive\/an-outstanding-photograph-from-1905\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Workers Leaving the Pirelli Factory in Milan<\/em><\/a>, <strong>1905<\/strong>: a name, a place, and a date that together form an authentic icon of the \u201cworld of Pirelli\u201d. Now restored and preserved at our Foundation, the giant photograph was taken by the great Milanese filmmaker-photographer, who was commissioned by Pirelli to represent its industrial power at the <strong>Milan International world\u2019s fair in 1906<\/strong>. More than two thousand faces of men and women outside the gates of the first <strong>factory in Via Ponte Seveso<\/strong> are shown looking up at a man armed with a camera and magnesium flash, who immortalises them as symbols of an industrial revolution in the making. In other words, a factory photograph as a tribute to a manufacturing force already in place. This is also the concept that inspires the <strong>photo\u00a0reportage\u00a0made inside the\u00a0Bicocca workshops in 1922\u00a0to celebrate the Pirelli Group\u2019s 50th anniversary.<\/strong> In the gigantic Farrel calendering machines from America subdued by men in overalls, and in the machines that dominate these sepia-coloured portraits, we can sense the full significance of the <strong>relationship between man and machine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The post-war period and the<strong>\u00a01950s\u00a0<\/strong>introduced a new\u00a0<strong>industrial renaissance<\/strong>, but the shots taken by the Dutch master <strong>Arno\u00a0Hammacher<\/strong>, in the newly opened\u00a0<strong>Pirelli tyre factory in Settimo Torinese<\/strong>, perfectly capture the concept of \u201cknow-how\u201d. Here, <strong>hands take centre stage<\/strong>: hands that know the secrets of rubber, hands that control a vulcaniser, hands that can bend machines to the will of man. This culture is investigated in many articles that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivistapirelli.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Pirelli<\/em>\u00a0magazine<\/strong><\/a> devoted to the<strong> mid-twentieth-century industrial boom<\/strong>, through its director at the time, the \u201cpoet-engineer\u201d\u00a0<strong>Leonardo Sinisgalli<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Times change \u2013 from the industrial renaissance to the structural crises of the\u00a01970s\u00a0\u2013 but the inquisitiveness of photographers seeking the \u201chuman\u201d side of the factory never varies: two young photographers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?query=Enzo+Nocera&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Enzo Nocera<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?query=Gianfranco+Corso&amp;titoloFoto=&amp;luogoRipresa=&amp;autoreFoto=&amp;descrSogg=&amp;descrittori=&amp;startDate=&amp;endDate=&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gianfranco Corso<\/strong><\/a>, made their own personal photo reportages for the company house organ\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/IT-PIRELLI-BIB0001-0010010?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Fatti e Notizie<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0between 1973 and 1977. Strictly in black and white, they were authentic <strong>picture-investigations into the meaning of work, with all its contradictions, problems, and prospects<\/strong>. Their factory portraits also became solo exhibitions of a changing Italy.<\/p>\n<p>And on the subject of changing factories, the view of another great poet of images cannot be neglected, for in\u00a0<strong>1985<\/strong> <strong>Gabriele Basilico\u2019s shoot<\/strong> \u2013 also in black and white \u2013 captured and forever preserved the moment when, with the official launch of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/activities\/the-bicocca-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bicocca Project<\/a>, the <strong>Milano Bicocca district<\/strong> began its transformation into a new urban organism. This passion for telling the stories of people, factories, and work \u201cfrom the inside\u201d is still as alive as ever.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/activities\/workers-the-history-and-future-of-pirelli-in-the-faces-of-those-who-make-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlo Furgeri Gilbert<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has worked with the Pirelli Foundation ever since it was set up in 2008, creating photo reportages at its\u00a0<strong>factories around the world<\/strong>, from the one in Breuburg, Germany, to those in \u0130zmit, Turkey, and Slatina, Romania. A fine example is Furgeri Gilbert\u2019s wide-ranging shoot that portrayed the creation of the new Industrial Centre in \u200b\u200bSettimo Torinese, the\u00a0<strong>Factory 4.0<\/strong>\u00a0of the future.
