Just one old photo of a cyclist can often tell the story of a whole existence.<\/p>\n<p>Snapshots taken \u2013 sometimes not without risk \u2013 on roads the world over.<strong> A history through photos devoted entirely to people and bicycles<\/strong>. Browsing through the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?collanaName=%22cycling%20races%20and%20everyday%20life%20with%20a%20bicycle%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bicycle Racing<\/strong><\/a>\u201d photographic section of our website is like plunging into a world of ancient heroes, with handlebar moustaches and dusty tracks, faces filled with exhaustion or dogged defiance, where the great champions of cycling share the same fatigue and pain as men whose names are long forgotten, together with those of the photographers. In the early years of the twentieth century, there was often someone from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?query=&amp;jsonVal=%7B%22jsonVal%22%3A%7B%22startDate%22%3A%22%22%2C%22endDate%22%3A%22%22%2C%22fieldDate%22%3A%22dataNormal%22%2C%22_perPage%22%3A20%2C%22collanaName%22%3A%22%5C%22corse+velo+e+vita+quotidiana+in+bicicletta%5C%22%22%7D%7D&amp;autoreFoto=%22Strazza%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Strazza Photo Reportage agency<\/strong><\/a> in Milan: their stamp appears on some minor masterpieces, now in our Historical Archive. Like the brilliant photographic retouching of the cyclist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-FT0001-0000000073\/ritratto-del-corridore-carlo-oriani.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20,%22collanaName%22:%22\\%22corse%20velo%20e%20vita%20quotidiana%20in%20bicicletta\\%22%22,%22autoreFoto%22:%22\\%22Strazza\\%22%22}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carlo Oriani<\/strong><\/a>, probably in the <strong>Parco Trotter<\/strong> in Milan after winning the <strong>Giro d\u2019Italia in 1913<\/strong>. Then there is the unknown cyclist, in an unknown year, but once again by the famous photographer Strazza, who created this delightful \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-FT0001-0000000080\/ritratto-ciclista-non-identificato-giubbotto-impermeabile-pirelli.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20,%22collanaName%22:%22\\%22corse%20velo%20e%20vita%20quotidiana%20in%20bicicletta\\%22%22,%22autoreFoto%22:%22\\%22Strazza\\%22%22}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">portrait of a cyclist wearing a Pirelli raincoat<\/a>\u201d. Wearing knickerbockers and a cloth cap, he is shown in front of the old <strong>Ambrogio Binda<\/strong> papermill in Milan. The Naviglio Pavese flows by behind him. We will never know what colour that bulky jacket was, nor will we ever know if he just happened to be there, or if he was actually posing. Two men who were certainly posing for Strazza were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-FT0001-0000000082\/corsa-34-sei-ore-34-al-velodromo-sempione-nel-1919.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20,%22collanaName%22:%22\\%22corse%20velo%20e%20vita%20quotidiana%20in%20bicicletta\\%22%22,%22autoreFoto%22:%22\\%22Strazza\\%22%22}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Belgian brothers Lucien and Marcel<\/strong><\/a>, first and third respectively in the <strong>Six Hours<\/strong> of <strong>1919<\/strong>. Between them is <strong>Valemberghe<\/strong>, second across the line \u2013 just to make sure, an anonymous hand has written their ranking directly on their jerseys.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the<strong> photo shoots of cycling races<\/strong> <strong>from the 1930s to the 1950s<\/strong> were the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?query=&amp;jsonVal=%7B%22jsonVal%22%3A%7B%22startDate%22%3A%22%22%2C%22endDate%22%3A%22%22%2C%22fieldDate%22%3A%22dataNormal%22%2C%22_perPage%22%3A20%2C%22collanaName%22%3A%22%5C%22cycling+races+and+everyday+life+with+a+bicycle%5C%22%22%7D%7D&amp;autoreFoto=%22Bordin%2C+Lauro%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lauro Bordin<\/strong><\/a>. Born in 1890 in Crespino, in the province of Rovigo, Veneto, Bordin was himself an excellent cyclist. After retiring from racing in 1924, he became a photojournalist and turned his camera on his former \u201ccolleagues\u201d. It was he who took the famous shot of two racing-car drivers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-FT0001-0000000068\/gara-ciclistica-nuvolari-e-campari-all-autodromo-monza-nel-1932.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20,%22collanaName%22:%22\\%22cycling%20races%20and%20everyday%20life%20with%20a%20bicycle\\%22%22,%22autoreFoto%22:%22\\%22Bordin,%20Lauro\\%22%22}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tazio Nuvolari<\/strong> and <strong>Giuseppe Campari<\/strong><\/a>, battling it out on two wheels in 1932. Lauro Bordin also took the first photos of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/activities\/stories-from-world-of-pirelli\/the-gran-premio-pirelli-a-showcase-for-young-cyclists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gran Premio Pirelli<\/strong><\/a>, the cycling tournament that became a springboard for many young champions in the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>This photographic cycling diary from our Historical Archive does not just look at racing, however. Just after the war, a number of shoots were made by such masters of photography as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?query=&amp;jsonVal=%7B%22jsonVal%22%3A%7B%22startDate%22%3A%22%22%2C%22endDate%22%3A%22%22%2C%22fieldDate%22%3A%22dataNormal%22%2C%22_perPage%22%3A20%2C%22collanaName%22%3A%22%5C%22cycling+races+and+everyday+life+with+a+bicycle%5C%22%22%7D%7D&amp;autoreFoto=%22Patellani%2C+Federico%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Federico Patellani<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Milani<\/strong>, who looked at<strong> bicycles as an everyday means of transport and faithful travelling companions<\/strong> at a time when Italy was discovering the immense value of being able to move around freely.
