In July 1971<\/strong>, just a couple of months after the Pirelli house organ Fatti e Notizie <\/em><\/strong>had adopted the large format typical of magazines at the time, the\u00a0\u201cVariet\u00e0\u201d <\/em>entertainment\u00a0section<\/strong>\u00a0was launched, with songs, TV, the pop star system, the\u00a0Sanremo Festival<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Canzonissima<\/strong>. The first \u201csemi-serious interview\u201d in\u00a0\u201cVariet\u00e0\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in July of 47 years ago was devoted to Virginia Ann \u201cMinnie\u201d Minoprio<\/strong><\/a>, a soubrette whom the not-so-young will certainly remember. She appeared together with Fred Bongusto<\/strong> in the closing signature tune of\u00a0Speciale per noi<\/em>, aired on television in January and February that year. A professional dancer, born on 4 July 1942 in Ware, not far from London,\u00a0Minnie Minoprio<\/strong>\u00a0was discovered by\u00a0Walter Chiari<\/strong>, who was talent-scouting in England for a musical,\u00a0Io e la margherita<\/em><\/strong>. Coming up for thirty, Minoprio had already had a career in musicals, films, advertising, and Saturday-night shows. But the Italians will always remember her for her performance with\u00a0Fred Bongusto<\/strong>, to the notes of\u00a0Quando mi dici cos\u00ec<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

And we cannot fail to recall the protagonist of the\u00a0Variet\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0section in September 1971: Nicoletta Strambelli, alias Patty Pravo<\/strong>. So many years have gone by that we do not know if the interviews with\u00a0Variet\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0were real or if they were concocted by the editors, but\u00a0Patty Pravo<\/a>\u00a0talking about herself for all of page 19 is exactly how we imagine her. From her opinions about her singer colleagues, to her dim view of journalists, to her ambivalent relationship with the public, through to insights into her private life which, in 1971, which were quite eye-opening. The\u00a0\u201cVariet\u00e0\u201d<\/em>\u00a0section in\u00a0Fatti e Notizie<\/em>\u00a0continued until July 1972: after portraits of other queens of Italian pop, such as Mina<\/strong> and\u00a0Ornella Vanoni<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> the section gradually moved towards actors. But music always remained part of the company magazine: right from the outset, the\u00a0\u201cCanzoni\u201d<\/a><\/em>\u00a0section<\/strong> appeared alongside\u00a0\u201cVariet\u00e0\u201d<\/em>. a complete panorama of an Italy that sang, listened to 45 rpm singles, followed Cantagiro<\/strong> and Festivalbar<\/strong> and, especially, never missed a word of musical gossip. Is Rita Pavone<\/strong> having family problems? Is\u00a0Nada<\/strong>\u00a0on the decline? Will\u00a0Gianni Morandi<\/strong>\u00a0cold-shoulder the Sanremo Festival in \u201972?<\/p>\n

Like\u00a0\u201cVariet\u00e0\u201d<\/em>, also\u00a0\u201cCanzoni\u201d<\/em>\u00a0first came out in\u00a0Fatti e Notizie<\/em>\u00a0in July 1971. The subject was the flop of Cantagiro that year, with Aretha Franklin<\/strong> and\u00a0Led Zeppelin<\/strong>\u00a0firing up the audience at the Vigorelli until the police were called in. The last\u00a0\u201cCanzoni\u201d<\/em>\u00a0came in October 1972, with an interview with a certain Cristiano Rossi<\/strong>, a twenty-five-year-old from Palermo, living with his family in Milan, a former player with Palermo and Mantova. A few years previously, Mina had heard him singing and convinced him not only to hang up his boots, but also to take part in Pippo Baudo\u2019s \u201cSettevoci\u201d<\/strong>, with the stage name \u201cChristian\u201d. He sang the signature tune of the \u201cChiss\u00e0 chi lo sa\u201d television programme in 1972. \u201cFuture plans?\u201d \u201cLots of evening gigs, then the Sanremo Festival and a trip to Japan for a tour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
