All it took was a couple of <strong>issues of <em>Pirelli<\/em> magazine in 1961<\/strong>,<strong> the year when Italy celebrated its Unification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1961_4.html?q=&amp;start=36&amp;lang=en#page\/36\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See You in 2011<\/a>\u201d was the article published in issue no. 4, in August 1961. This was a photo reportage from <strong>Italia \u201961, the International Labour Exhibition in Turin<\/strong> that told the story of the country\u2019s first century, united under the banner of cooperation and commitment. Most of the photos are in black and white, showing a Turin Expo \u201cwith no pushing or shoving, without that strange atmosphere in which confusion, weariness, noise, and a great desire to see things becomes cheerful elation.\u201d The author of the report was <strong>Ugo Mulas<\/strong>, the first of the great names who would come together in the pages of the <em>Pirelli<\/em> magazine devoted to the event in Turin. This was the time when the collaboration between the Lombard photographer and the historic company magazine was just beginning: the photos of Turin \u201961 came just a few months after his <strong>reportage on Rome of the 1960 Olympics<\/strong>. From then on, Mulas\u2019s picture stories roamed far and wide, from rubber plantations in Brazil to the sculptor <strong>Thomas Moore<\/strong>\u2019s journey into marble, to illustrations for <strong>Vittorio Sereni<\/strong>\u2019s articles through to his portrait of the artist<strong> Lucio Fontana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of Mulas\u2019s photos for \u201cSee You in 2011\u201d is a striking one in lively colours: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-FT0001-0000006715\/italia-61.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22query%22:%22mosaic%22,%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20}}&amp;attachmentMisc=undefined&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>photo of a mosaic<\/strong><\/a> on display in the <strong>Pirelli pavilion at the Expo<\/strong>. And here we have the second great name: that of the painter <strong>Renato Guttuso<\/strong>. It was his drawing of <em>La Ricerca Scientifica<\/em>, which was used by the <strong>master mosaicists of the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Ravenna<\/strong> to create the mosaic for Italia \u201961: \u201ca dramatic summary of man\u2019s long journey to understand nature and its laws\u201d. Today, this great mosaic and its preparatory cartoon are in the spaces of the Pirelli Foundation in Milan, together with other sketches and drawings that Guttuso made in 1959 \u2013 also for the magazine \u2013 to illustrate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1959_1.html?q=Guttuso&amp;start=39&amp;lang=en#page\/40\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>travel diary in Egypt with<\/strong> <strong>Franco Fellini<\/strong><\/a>, the pseudonym of the writer <strong>Giovanni Pirelli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The cover of issue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/search\/IT-PIRELLI-BIB0001-0021289\/result.html?query=&amp;titoloRivista=&amp;autoreRivista=&amp;startDate=1961&amp;endDate=1961&amp;categoriaRivista=&amp;testoRivista=&amp;numeroRivista=4&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no. 4 of 1961 of <em>Pirelli<\/em> magazine<\/a> was taken from another photo by Mulas: one of the unmistakable columns of the <strong>Palazzo del Lavoro<\/strong> in Turin, which was home to Italia \u201961. And here we have another two illustrious personalities: the engineer <strong>Pier Luigi Nervi<\/strong> and the architect <strong>Gio Ponti<\/strong>. Nervi put his name to this symbol of the Unification of Italy in Turin, while Gio Ponti had worked with him the previous year on another symbol of Italian modernity: the quintessentially Milanese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/fotografie\/search\/result.html?collanaName=%22grattacielo%20Pirelli%22&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pirelli Tower<\/strong><\/a>. Both of them, Nervi and Ponti, would entrust their ideas about architecture to the pages of <em>Pirelli<\/em> magazine a number of times: from the engineer-architect Nervi\u2019s \u201cThe Art of Building\u201d and \u201cResistance by Form\u201d to Gio Ponti\u2019s \u201cAn Architect\u2019s Experience\u201d and \u201cThe Perpetuity of a Building\u201d. The last of these was written to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his vertical jewel, also known as the \u201cPirellone\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the last issue in 1961 of <em>Pirelli<\/em> magazine, we find \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1961_6.html?q=Promemoria%20italiano&amp;start=66&amp;lang=en#page\/66\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Italian Memorandum<\/a>\u201d, with the subtitle: \u201cWhat I learned while working at the Exhibition of the Regions at Italia \u201961\u201d. Another famous name: <strong>Mario Soldati<\/strong>. The eclectic writer-director-journalist from Turin had been entrusted with organising the \u201c<strong>Exhibition of the Regions<\/strong>\u201d, as an integral part of Italia \u201961, with the aim of facilitating the adoption of the new form of administration.
