It was located in Via Ponte Seveso, now Via Fabio Filzi, in <strong>Milan<\/strong>. The area, which was then known as Corpi Santi Fuori Porta Nuova, was in the open countryside, outside the city.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-77525 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06074011\/stabilimento_1872-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06074011\/stabilimento_1872-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06074011\/stabilimento_1872-768x607.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06074011\/stabilimento_1872-1024x810.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The <strong>factory<\/strong>, which initially consisted of a single building 1000-square-metre building along the Sevesetto river, employed <strong>40 workers<\/strong> and <strong>5 office staff<\/strong>, and manufactured belts, valves, and rubber hoses. As new applications were found for this material, production rapidly expanded to include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/documenti\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-MISC0001-0000000322\/34-catalogo-generale-settembre-1886-34.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22query%22:%22catalogo%22,%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20}}&amp;attachmentMisc=SI&amp;lang=en\">sanitary and haberdashery items<\/a> (1877), <strong>electrical conductors<\/strong> (1879), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/documenti\/detail\/IT-PIRELLI-MISC0001-0000011742\/pneumatico-attacco-massiccio-denominato-34-ercole-34.html?jsonVal={%22jsonVal%22:{%22query%22:%22ercole%22,%22startDate%22:%22%22,%22endDate%22:%22%22,%22fieldDate%22:%22dataNormal%22,%22_perPage%22:20}}&amp;attachmentMisc=SI\">tyres<\/a> (1890). The factory quickly used up all the available space, so in order to start production of \u201cpneumatic tyres for velocipedes\u201d, another plot of land was purchased in 1890. It was located beyond the Sevesetto, and was known as the \u201c<strong>Brusada<\/strong>\u201d, from the ruins of a \u201cburnt\u201d farmhouse. This was to be the last plot available for the factory to expand, for by this time the city had swallowed up the entire neighbourhood and new spaces could be found only by moving away. Pirelli\u2019s <strong>second factory<\/strong> in Milan was therefore built out in the countryside at <strong>Bicocca<\/strong> in 1908. Work continued in the factory in the centre of Milan until the Second World War, when the building was destroyed by bombing raids in July 1943.
