The work of Gio Ponti, who designed it \u201c<em>in relation to and in continuity with the architecture<\/em>\u201d, as we read in issue 71 of <em>Edilizia Moderna<\/em> devoted to the Pirelli headquarters in September 1960, the design gave a <strong>stylistic identity<\/strong> to all the premises and to all the furnishings, from the walls and <strong>floors<\/strong>, all clad in Pirelli rubber and <strong>linoleum<\/strong>, to the doors, through to the lifts, clocks, lamps and other lighting equipment, in the \u201cdemocatic\u201d belief that all the \u201cinhabitants\u201d of the building, from the company chairman to the office clerks, should live in the same spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Colour, which was particularly important for Ponti \u2013 as he himself says in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivistapirelli.org\/en\/selezione_antologica\/tutto-al-mondo-deve-essere-coloratissimo\/\">Everything in the World Must Be Brightly Coloured<\/a>\u201d, an article he wrote for <em>Pirelli <\/em>magazine in 1952 \u2013 was used as a \u201cmeans of correcting the monotony and anonymity of the spaces\u201d in the doors, which were clad in red linoleum, and on the floors, in yellow and black linoleum. <strong>Gio Ponti<\/strong> and <strong>Alberto Rosselli<\/strong> also chose the furniture: the desks were those Ponti had designed in 1955 for the <strong>Rima<\/strong> company, with metal frames and wooden or linoleum tops<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-77582 \" src=\"https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06085125\/Prop2_1903_anni_1960_Publifoto_Grattacielo-e1588751687626-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"438\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06085125\/Prop2_1903_anni_1960_Publifoto_Grattacielo-e1588751687626-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06085125\/Prop2_1903_anni_1960_Publifoto_Grattacielo-e1588751687626-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpsite-assets.fondazionepirelli.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/06085125\/Prop2_1903_anni_1960_Publifoto_Grattacielo-e1588751687626-1024x791.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 438px) 100vw, 438px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The large meeting room tables recalled the ground plan of the \u201crice grain\u201d building. The upholstered seats, on the other hand, were made by <strong>Arflex<\/strong>, a company set up in 1950 to an idea by the Pirelli engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/it\/archivio-storico\/pirelli-storie-di-uomini-e-di-invenzioni-carlo-barassi\/\">Carlo Barassi<\/a>, which produced furniture upholstered with <strong>Pirelli foam rubber<\/strong>, bringing chairs, armchairs, sofas, and beds onto the market. They were designed by the greatest names in 1950s architecture and design, building on the experience acquired in the 1930s, when several Rationalist architects, including Ponti himself, had carried out the first experiments in furniture upholstered with latex foam rubber, which had been exhibited in the furniture show of the <strong>VI Triennale di Milano<\/strong> in 1936. \u201cHall\u201d armchairs, designed by <strong>Roberto Menghi<\/strong> in 1958, were chosen for the waiting rooms in the tower.<\/p>\n<p>The Pirellone was ready to embark on its <strong>new life<\/strong>.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/exhibition\/the-pirellone-the-story-of-a-skyscraper\/\">Back to the main page<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One interesting feature in the history of the tower is that of its interior design.
