{"id":78009,"date":"2018-02-13T15:00:44","date_gmt":"2018-02-13T14:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/?p=78009"},"modified":"2022-04-21T15:25:41","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T14:25:41","slug":"hermetic-landscapes-ungaretti-montale-and-quasimodo-for-pirelli-magazine-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/activities\/stories-from-world-of-pirelli\/hermetic-landscapes-ungaretti-montale-and-quasimodo-for-pirelli-magazine-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Hermetic Landscapes: Ungaretti, Montale and Quasimodo for Pirelli Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Giuseppe Ungaretti<strong>\u2019<\/strong>s archaic, primitive\u00a0<strong>Brazil<\/strong>, Eugenio Montale\u2019s gentle, cheerful\u00a0<strong>Versilia<\/strong>, Salvatore Quasimodo\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Sicily<\/strong>\u00a0drenched in pure white light: from 1949 to 1951, the classic threesome of\u00a0<strong>Italian hermetic writers<\/strong>\u00a0helped shape Pirelli magazine, which had been launched in 1948 as a company magazine open to the greatest names in contemporary literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giuseppe Ungaretti<\/strong>\u00a0was already at the height of his fame when he published \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1949_1.html?q=&amp;start=14&amp;lang=en#page\/14\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vecchio Brasile<\/a><\/strong>\u201d, a collection of sonnets, in the magazine\u2019s first issue in 1949. A complex but brilliant composition, this was the Italian translation of the \u201cchronicles\u201d that the Brazilian poet\u00a0<strong>Oswald de Andrade<\/strong>\u00a0had dreamt up in 1924 and \u201925 as though they had been written by explorers and conquerors of an Amazon lost in the mists of time. The original work by Andrade was entitled\u00a0<strong><em>Pau Brasil<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the Tree of Brazil \u2013 and it is a perfect expression of the Modernist movement that brought to life the literary world in the South American country in the 1920s. In other words, this was the rediscovery of a golden age of Brazil. Ungaretti, who taught at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo from 1936 to 1942, added a further \u201cchronicle\u201d of his own to Andrade\u2019s, which was published in the magazine under the title \u201cBoschetti di cahus\u00f9\u201d. \u201cThose Indies use\u00a0<strong>rubber<\/strong>\u00a0\/ for bottles and water-skins\u2026 Seringa is the rubber \/ And he who extracts it the seringueiro \/ And the strange little wood is the seringal\u2026\u201d. The photos that accompanied the article had been taken forty years previously by\u00a0<strong>Alberto Pirelli<\/strong>, son of the founder Giovanni Battista and the vice-chairman of Pirelli in 1949, during a study trip to the\u00a0<strong>rubber plantations in Manaus<\/strong>, in the Amazon basin. \u201cUngaretti\u2019s jest\u201d was taken up years later \u2013 in Pirelli magazine no. 1, 1953 \u2013 by the literary critic Giansiro Ferrata as an example of living \u201cinside\u201d poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Pirelli magazine no. 4, July 1949: \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1949_4.html?q=&amp;start=18&amp;lang=en#page\/18\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vacanze in Versilia<\/a><\/strong>\u201d bears the signature of\u00a0<strong>Eugenio Montale<\/strong>. This minimal diary tells of a holiday in Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Pietrasanta: \u201ca delightful hole hidden in the green\u201d, with a pergola of unripe grapes \u201cto see without being seen, the way I like it\u201d. The result is a story of delicate and astonishing humour, filled with the amused frivolity that the poet dispensed bit by bit, sparingly, so as not to upset his restrained aloofness. And just as Montale described Versilia for the magazine, so the Lucca-born writer\u00a0<strong>Ermanno Pea<\/strong>\u00a0decided that he too would talk of \u201chalf a century of Versilia\u201d in an article published in issue no. 4 of the same magazine in 1953.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salvatore Quasimodo<\/strong>\u00a0had already put his name to the translation of the 23rd Book of the Iliad in 1949, with \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1949_3.html?q=&amp;start=36&amp;lang=en#page\/36\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giochi funebri in onore di Patroclo<\/a><\/strong>\u201d. But to remain with our\u00a0<strong>hermetic landscapes<\/strong>, we cannot fail to go to the \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1951_5.html?q=&amp;start=45&amp;lang=en#page\/44\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muri siciliani<\/a><\/strong>\u201d in no. 5 of 1951. Just a few lines, not even half a page, but of extreme pithiness, describing a man who builds a house for himself by the sea in Trabia: a man who is worker and boss, architect and engineer, a man barefoot and with \u201csandpaper hands\u201d, with \u201ca purple nail crushed by a beam\u201d. And his house is cut by the light, a house of foam that might easily slip like a sailing ship into the sea. A love letter that the Sicilian poet wrote to land that was Greek but also primitive, Norman, Saracen and Spanish.
