The magazine published articles that ranged from art to architecture, through to sociology and economics, urban planning and literature. The journal was the brainchild of\u00a0<strong>Arturo Tofanelli<\/strong>, who was chief editor until 1957 with Giuseppe Luraghi and\u00a0<strong>Leonardo Sinisgalli<\/strong>. Its aim was to make the company\u2019s technical and business culture part of the culture of society at large. After Tofanelli, the editor-in-chief was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivistapirelli.org\/en\/selezione_antologica\/arrigo-castellani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Arrigo Castellani<\/strong><\/a>, the \u201cPropaganda Director\u201d of Pirelli and, in the final years,\u00a0<strong>Gianfranco Isalberti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For over two decades the magazine was the forum for some of Italy\u2019s most advanced cultural debates, with contributions by such great writers as\u00a0<strong>Giulio Carlo Argan<\/strong>, Enzo Biagi,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/search\/result.html?query=&amp;titoloRivista=&amp;autoreRivista=Dino+Buzzati&amp;startDate=&amp;endDate=&amp;testoRivista=&amp;numeroRivista=&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dino Buzzati<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1970_1.html?q=&amp;start=56&amp;lang=en#page\/56\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Italo Calvino<\/strong><\/a>, Camilla Cederna, Gillo Dorfles,\u00a0<strong>Umberto Eco<\/strong>, Arrigo Levi,\u00a0<strong>Bruno Munari<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Salvatore Quasimodo<\/strong>, Alberto Ronchey,\u00a0<strong>Giuseppe Ungaretti<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elio Vittorini<\/strong>\u00a0and many other great names of Italian culture, with articles and reports illustrated by artists of the calibre of Renato Guttuso,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/disegni-e-manifesti\/search\/result.html?query=&amp;oggettoIco=&amp;titoloIco=&amp;autoreAmbitoIco=Mendini&amp;descrizioneIco=&amp;startDate=&amp;endDate=&amp;campagnaIco=&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Alessandro Mendini<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Fulvio Bianconi<\/strong>, Mino Maccari, and Ernesto Treccani.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with other company house organs published in those years,\u00a0<em>Pirelli\u00a0<\/em>magazine was a case apart right from the first issues. This was especially apparent in its interest not only in poetry and literature but also in the figurative arts, and it soon became a benchmark for later company publications. The role of painters and illustrators in\u00a0<em>Pirelli<\/em>\u00a0magazine became increasingly important in the second half of the 1950s and in the first half of 1960s, but waned in the second half of the 1960s. This was when photography gained the upper hand, with celebrated photographers such as\u00a0<strong>Ugo Mulas<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Arno Hammacher<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Federico Patellani<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Fulvio Roiter<\/strong>, among others. The magazine\u2019s focus on illustrations was partly a natural expression of the cultural climate in Italy, and particularly in Milan, from the 1930s to the immediate post-war period, when there was a close bond between artists and writers, industry and literature, art and advertising.<\/p>\n<p>Under the pen-name Franco Fellini, also<strong>\u00a0Giovanni Pirelli<\/strong>\u00a0signed\u00a0<strong>six articles<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Pirelli:<\/em>\u00a0<em>Rivista d\u2019informazione e di tecnica<\/em>\u00a0<strong>between 1954 and 1959<\/strong>. The articles published in the February and April issues of 1959 were about<strong>\u00a0a trip to Egypt<\/strong>\u00a0that Pirelli went on\u00a0<strong>with his friend Renato Guttuso<\/strong>. The idea was to document the construction of the Aswan Dam for a report to be published in the magazine. The first article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1959_1.html?q=Franco%20Fellini&amp;start=39&amp;lang=en#page\/38\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Where the Nile is the only road<\/a>\u201d, tells the story of Giovanni Pirelli\u2019s journey through Sudan and Egypt in December 1958. The second article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/archivio-storico\/bookreader\/pubblicazioni-e-riviste\/RivistaPirelli\/1959_2.html?q=Franco%20Fellini&amp;start=64&amp;lang=en#page\/64\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The message of Seneb the Dwarf<\/a>\u201d, is about how Pirelli\u2019s journey along the Nile continued, together with his wife Marinella and Renato Guttuso and his wife Mimise, at the beginning of 1959.
