{"id":81462,"date":"2020-10-14T13:06:06","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T12:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/?p=81462"},"modified":"2022-04-21T13:30:03","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T12:30:03","slug":"roberto-menghiand-his-good-design-for-pirelli-polyethylene-containers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazionepirelli.org\/en\/activities\/exhibitions\/roberto-menghiand-his-good-design-for-pirelli-polyethylene-containers\/","title":{"rendered":"Roberto Menghi<br>and his \u201cgood design\u201d for Pirelli polyethylene containers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The discovery of isotactic polypropylene in <strong>1954<\/strong> by the chemist <strong>Giulio Natta<\/strong>, who later became a Nobel laureate, gave rise to a completely new industry of plastics and synthetic materials. <strong>Pirelli<\/strong>, which has always had a close eye on research into materials and into their industrial applications, started manufacturing items in polyethylene. \u201cThe glass of the future will be like rubber\u201d, announces the title of an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rivistapirelli.org\"><em>Pirelli <\/em>magazine<\/a> devoted to this extraordinary material, \u201ca resin that can be blown like glass but with the advantage of being unbreakable\u201d. The Pirelli plant in Monza turned out polyethylene containers for industrial uses but also for everyday life. Towards the end of the decade, the architect <strong>Roberto Menghi<\/strong> was called in to design new lines of products. In <strong>1956<\/strong> he had already won the <strong>Compasso d\u2019Oro<\/strong> with a bucket made of polyethylene, manufactured by Smalterie Meridionali. With his <strong>petrol canister<\/strong> of 1959, Menghi achieved the perfect balance between form and function. The canister was presented to the public with the words: \u201cgood design is what is created for mass production by the closest cooperation between factory engineers and expert designer-artists\u201d.
