Jane Austen was born in Steventon, England, two hundred and fifty years ago, on 16 December 1775. One of the most influential British writers of the nineteenth century, Austen was a leading figure of English Romanticism and Realism. Her novels explore life in late eighteenth-century England, especially within the rural gentry, portrayed through the eyes of her heroines. Among her best-known works are Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Emma.
