Mix and Match
Ever since it was first set up in 1872, Pirelli has made scientific research one of the core values of its business. At the heart of this policy is the rubber compound: a sophisticated blend of ingredients whose formula ensures the fundamental features of a tyre, such as grip, wear, safety, and sustainability.
Looking through the documents in the Historical Archive – including patents, formula books, material studies, alongside books and magazines from the scientific and technical library – the students will be able to retrace the story of Pirelli’s work in the fields of materials and sustainability: a tale of innovation that continues to this day.
The class will then have a chance to visit the advanced chemistry laboratory where raw materials, parts, and compounds are tested. Alternatively, they will visit the Continuous Compound Mixing (CCM) unit, the innovative system patented by Pirelli that ensures high levels of precision in mixing right from the start of the production process.
The activity takes place at the Pirelli Foundation and in the physics and chemistry labs or at the CCM unit. A single class of students starting from the third year is expected to participate.
