City in ruins
Danny Ryan is an Irish mobster framed by his Rhode Island family, hunted by police, and forced to flee to Los Angeles, crossing the United States from coast to coast. The character created by Don Winslow in the novel “City on Fire” comes to the end of his run in the final chapter of the trilogy dedicated to him. At the beginning of “City in Ruins” Danny has managed to get back on his feet, he is a casino owner and partner in some luxury hotels in Las Vegas. A respected wealthy businessman, who survived the life he tried to escape. An easy life is not his thing, however, and when he decides to buy a plot of land to build a resort, a dangerous war breaks out with Las Vegas real estate brokers, a rival owner of another casino and an FBI agent determined to take revenge. Add the ghosts from his past and Danny will have to fight to save himself and his family. The worthy conclusion to an epic saga, inspired by the “Aeneid” and written in the sharp and incisive style that, as always, leaves the reader waiting for the next book. It’s a shame that, with “City in Ruins”, Winslow announced his farewell to writing.
