David Foster Wallace was born in Ithaca, in the United States, on 21 February, 1962, and died in Claremont, on 12 September, 2008. Wallace is acknowledged as one of the most innovative authors in American literature. Infinite Jest is considered to be his masterpiece, and the novel made the author a worldwide cult figure; the book describes a not-too-distant future which is worryingly similar to our own world, in which products, entertainment and advertising fill even the small gaps in daily life.
