Marguerite Yourcenar
Marguerite Yourcenar was born in Brussels on 8 June 1903. The historical novel Memoirs of Hadrian is considered to be her masterpiece, in which narration of the fall of the Roman Empire is interweaved with that of Emperor Hadrian's decline. The prominent inscription in the Pirelli Library, in the Bicocca neighbourhood in Milan, is taken from this book: “The founding of libraries was like constructing more public granaries, amassing reserves against a spiritual winter which by certain signs, in spite of myself, I see ahead”.
