Sandro Munari: a sideways life
In 2007 Sandro Munari, the “Dragon of Cavarzere”, decided to tell his story to sports journalist Sergio Remondino. It resulted in a biography that, more than a decade later, has been revised by the author, who made changes to nearly all the texts, enhancing it with two brand-new contributions. From his childhood in the lower Polesine area until his last real race in 1996, through the great victories that set him among the greatest rally drivers of all time. Quick, with great tactical intelligence, but also gifted with great sensitivity and refinement. The legend of the Dragon is also outlined through the story of the cars that he drove and in which he achieved historic feats, like the glorious Lancia Stratos, with which he “hit the jackpot at Monte Carlo” three years running, or the Fulvia HS. Both these cars left their mark in the history of Pirelli’s tyre development, with the success of the CINTURATO in motor racing competitions, with the development of the CN36, the CN54 and subsequently the P7, which inaugurated a new generation of belted tyres. His historic navigators too were extremely important, including, among others, Luciano Lombardini, Mario Mannucci and Silvio Maiga, companions in adventure with whom he shared countless victories. “Una vita di traverso” (a sideways life) is the title that the great champion chose for this book, resulting from dozens of hours in conversation with the author.
