“The Sports Workshop”: an evening devoted to the new book published by Marsilio Arte.
At the Teatro Franco Parenti
A behind-the-scenes story of sport as competition, knowledge, skill and community. This is the aim of “The Sports Workshop: Team Work, Research, Technology, Passion and Social Value” (L’officina dello sport. Le squadre, la ricerca, la tecnologia, la passione e i valori sociali ), a book edited by the Pirelli Foundation and published by Marsilio Arte. The book will be presented on Wednesday 26 June at 7 p.m. at the Teatro Franco Parenti in the presence of Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive vice president of Pirelli, and numerous guests from the world of culture and sport. For the occasion, the foyer of the Theatre and the Bagni Misteriosi will host a series of installations that draw on images from the Pirelli Historical Archive, with scale reproductions of the previously unexhibited plates created by the artist Lorenzo Mattotti to illustrate the volume.
The editorial project, which is available in separate English and Italian editions, documents the worksites, the “workshops”, the laboratories, and sports product factories. It tells the story of the backstage of competitions, with the voices, sounds, anthems and staging, together with the narratives of sport. And it also looks at the role of sports within corporate welfare initiatives, both past and present. The book has an introductory section with institutional contributions by Marco Tronchetti Provera, Giovanni Malagò, Evelina Christillin and Stefano Domenicali. It has a narrative section with a story by the writer Joe Lansdale and other contributions on the links between Pirelli and sport by Antonio Calabrò, Ambrogio Beccaria, and Mario Isola. There is also a section with essays that shed light on many aspects of the world of sport. Emanuela Audisio, Eva Cantarella, Giuseppe Di Piazza, Giuseppe Lupo, and Darwin Pastorin, are some of the writers concerned. Additionally, the book also contains thematic fact sheets on the sports in which Pirelli has played a leading role during the course of its history.
The project also includes a dedicated web platform, which will soon be available online, where users will be able to examine all the content of the book, with a timeline illustrating Pirelli’s passion for sport, covering over 150 years of the company’s history.
