Pirelli Foundation for IBBY International
The Pirelli Foundation is proud to support the 39th IBBY World Congress. IBBY (the International Board on Books for Young People) is a global non-profit organisation founded in 1953 by the writer Jella Lepman, with the aim of improving the quality of life for children and adolescents. It is committed to ensuring and defending their access to books and reading, with a special focus on those in disadvantaged and remote areas.
IBBY’s values align closely with those of Pirelli and the Pirelli Foundation, particularly as regards promoting reading among the young. Pirelli’s commitment has inspired numerous initiatives in recent years, including events with renowned writers for schools, educational workshops, readings in company libraries, and the creation of the Premio Campiello Junior, an award that honours works of fiction and poetry written for children aged 7 to 14.
The 2024 edition of the IBBY Congress will be held in Trieste from 30 August to 1 September. During the congress, IBBY Italia will also open the exhibition Fateci cominciare dai bambini: Libri come ponti (“Let Us Begin with the Children: Books as Bridges”) dedicated to Jella Lepman. This exhibition, co-organised with the City of Trieste, will be hosted at the Sala Umberto Veruda. Twenty illustrators – ten from Italy and ten from around the world – bring to life the story of this extraordinary woman, who, in the aftermath of the Second World War, envisioned books as “bridges of relationships.” Jella Lepman believed that books could unite diverse populations and help children imagine and build a better future together.
