Mission: Tyre
How does an object take shape? Can the children work it out? And what steps will they take to get there? On this learning journey, they will explore the “world of rubber”, its countless uses, and the changes that led to making so many everyday and surprising things: from hoses to soles for shoes, and hot-water bottles to tyres. Looking closely at archive documents, they will piece together clues that will ultimately tell the story of Pirelli’s production. They will learn how a tyre is made, what materials go into it, and what its job really is. The main focus will be on the tread, which the children will study to see how its pattern helps keep us safe on the roads, for example. The journey will then move on to tyres for electric vehicles, which are suitable for quiet, efficient cars.
In the practical workshop session, they will put their findings to work by designing a tyre tread and getting it moving. This will be a fun way to find out how power, technology, and creativity fit together.
The activity takes place at the Pirelli Foundation for one upper primary class.
