Dante
Durante di Alighiero degli Alighieri, better known as Dante, was born in Florence between 14 May and 13 June 1265. Referred to as the “Supreme Poet”, he is considered to be the father of the Italian language and is famous the world over for his “Comedy”, later dubbed “Divine” by Boccaccio. This timeless literary masterpiece has had a lasting impact on Italian literature, and the Florentine dialect in which it was written ultimately formed the foundation of what became standard Italian.
