Eugenio Montale
On 12 September 1981, Eugenio Montale, one of the greatest Italian poets of the 20th century and winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize for Literature, passed away in Milan. His poetic works were able to capture the concerns of the 20th century, addressing themes such as the “pain of living”, the collapse of certainty, but also searching for a reason that could deal with the sorrow and anguish of living. His poetry collections include Finisterre, Ossi di seppia (Cuttlefish bones), Le occasioni (The occasions), Xenia and Satura. Montale wrote the article “Vacanze in Versilia” “Holidays in Versilia”) for the Rivista Pirelli magazine, published in issue 4 of 1949.
