George Orwell, the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, passed away in London 75 years ago, on 21 January 1950. A journalist and political and cultural essayist, Orwell is best known for his allegorical novella Animal Farm and the dystopian masterpiece 1984. In the latter, he paints a grim picture of the future under a totalitarian regime that distorts reality and subjugates the populace into unwavering obedience to a leader whom no one has ever seen in person, "Big Brother".
