Hermann Hesse
Hermann Hesse died in Montagnola, in Canton Ticino, Switzerland, on 9 August 1962. Hesse was the author of several novels and poetry collections, and was often inspired by existentialist themes, spirituality and Eastern religions and philosophies – Buddhism in particular. In 1946, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and in the second half of the 20th century his works became highly popular, making him one of the Germany-writing authors most read in the world. His most renowned novels include Peter Camenzind, Siddhartha, Narcissus and Goldmund, Steppenwolf and The glass bead game.
