John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, in South Africa, on 3 January 1892, and died in Bournemouth, in England, on 2 September 1973. The great success of his novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings contributed to the birth of the modern fantasy genre, of which Tolkien is the most influential exponent to this day. Fifty years after his death, his books have become classics of world literature and still top the charts in many countries.
