Jean-Paul Sartre
Jean-Paul-Charles-Aymard Sartre was born in Paris 120 years ago, on 21 June 1905. A philosopher, writer, and playwright, Sartre was a central figure in French existentialism. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, but declined it, believing that a writer’s value should only be judged after death. His most important works include the novel Nausea, as well as Being and Nothingness, and Critique of Dialectical Reason.
