John Ernest Steinbeck Jr. was born in Salinas, California, on 27 February 1902 and passed away in New York on 20 December 1968. A towering figure in twentieth-century American literature and a key representative of the “Lost Generation,” he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 for The Grapes of Wrath, which is widely regarded as his masterpiece. In 1962, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His other celebrated works include Of Mice and Men, Tortilla Flat, and East of Eden.
