    Navigate Your Stars

“Navigate your stars”, says the title of a speech by Jesmyn Ward, two-time winner of the National Book Award, published by Scribner. This is the speech she gave at the commencement ceremony at Tulane University, where she teaches creative writing. It is a reflection on the hard life of her youth, growing up in a poor family in Mississippi, on discrimination, and on the importance of education and perseverance: “As an adult, I understand that finding the kind of life I want to live requires constant work, constant study, constant risk-taking, and that there are no easy routes to success. So for a decade I made the best choices I could. I tried not to bow under the weight of rejection.”
