Primo Levi
Primo Levi was born on 31 July 1919 in Turin, where he died on 11 April 1987. As well as being one of the greatest Italian writers of the 20th century, Levi was also a chemist and actively took part in anti-fascist resistance activities, until he was arrested in 1943 and deported to Auschwitz in 1944. He narrated his experience in the concentration camp in the book If this is a man, now a classic of Italian literature. His interest in science transpires in several of his works, such as The wrench and The periodic table; his novel The truce won the first edition of the Campiello Literary Prize in 1963.
