Simone Lucie Ernestine Marie Bertrand de Beauvoir passed away in Paris on 14 April 1986. A towering figure in French literature and philosophy, she was one of the leading exponents of the existentialist movement and a key inspiration behind the French feminist movement of 1968. Her most notable works include the novels She Came to Stay and The Blood of Others, and the essay The Second Sex.
