23 April marks World Book and Copyright Day, an event established by UNESCO in 1991. The occasion is also known as The Day of Books and Roses, whcih takes its name from a Catalan tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, linked to the Diada de Sant Jordi (“Saint George’s Day”), when it is customary to give a rose. In keeping with this tradition, Catalan booksellers offer a rose with every book sold.
