The new role of management systems set out in a recently published collection of research papers

Effective process management and control are essential for running a business. It is vital to always have the right information at the right time. It is also a matter of production and organisational culture, which is still needed. The collection of research papers entitled ‘I sistemi manageriali e di controllo tra tradizione e innovazione’ (Management and control systems: from tradition to innovation) is therefore well worth reading to gain a better understanding.
The research papers presented at the 14th Management Control Workshop, organised by the University of Teramo on 4 July 2025, focused on the relationship between management and control systems and innovation processes in contexts characterised by sustainability, digitalisation, and increasing environmental complexity. In other words, the aim was to investigate the many aspects of the application of the latest management and control systems in the majority of today’s businesses, which are, in fact, faced with growing complexity (not only of an economic nature).
The aim of each study is to assess whether management and control systems, in their traditional form, are still adequate to support decision-making processes effectively, whilst highlighting the need for them to evolve in a deliberate and planned manner. This assessment leads to one conclusion: it is possible to explore how management and control systems can be reinterpreted and innovated in terms of their operational logic. There are, however, certain areas that require closer scrutiny, such as information systems. These are evolving from tools primarily designed to support internal decision-making into dynamic infrastructures capable of integrating diverse data sources, partly thanks to artificial intelligence. Another point under scrutiny is the overall role of organisational structures, which are increasingly becoming centres of advisory and strategic responsibility. Not to mention the control processes themselves, which are evolving to become more continuous, proactive and predictive, thanks to the use of advanced analytical and simulation tools.
The picture painted by the collection of research contributions brought together in this book is therefore a complex and varied one. It is a multi-dimensional picture that must be examined carefully to gain a better understanding of how businesses are evolving.
