A series of studies compiled in an anthology that help us to understand

A good corporate culture can also be recognised by the attention paid to work. This is a fundamental principle that is still often underestimated. Understanding and appreciating its implications, and being aware of its various manifestations, are important steps that benefit all those involved in a company. For this reason, it is worth reading the collection of articles, analyses and research on business and human rights contained in ‘Impresa e diritti umani sul lavoro tra normativa e prassi’ (Business and human rights at work: from legislation to practice), an anthology recently published and edited by Fausta Guarriello.

The editor herself explains the purpose of this body of research, which aims to explore in depth ‘the issue of corporate accountability for risks posed to human rights, particularly in the workplace, in the countries where the company operates – both as a parent company and through subsidiaries and global supply chains’. It is, therefore, a broad and complex issue. One that cannot be oversimplified but which, instead, must be explored in depth, perhaps starting from a variety of experiences. For this reason, the research papers presented share a common thread: each author has developed their own personal research trajectory on the subject under investigation, starting from the study of transnational collective bargaining experiences in certain large companies, or from voluntary approaches to corporate social responsibility, or from the use of remedial measures in an extraterritorial context, or, furthermore, by providing analysis and commentary on the initial application of relevant national legislation. The collection, therefore, presents a comprehensive overview of the relationship between business and labour rights. The first part comprises research that takes into account the new obligations, including legal ones, that have recently been introduced; the second part, on the other hand, brings together studies on individual business experiences and case studies that can clarify important operational aspects (an approach also followed in the appendix, which includes specific ‘cases and materials’).

The anthology of research compiled by Fausta Guarriello is certainly not an easy read, but it is undoubtedly a book that anyone wishing to gain a sound understanding of a sensitive and increasingly important issue should read.
