An archive in the Bicocca district of Milan tells the story of a major industrial group, while also recounting a chapter of the cultural history of the city where it all began in 1872. The Pirelli Foundation Historical Archive safeguards the company’s industrial, technical, cultural and artistic memory: a constellation of tales about a multidisciplinary culture in which technology, innovation, and creative and literary minds converge. In this podcast, these stories chart the course of a bicycle tour through Milan. Along the way, the voice of Gino de Crescenzo, aka Pacifico, guides us through the evolving ties between industry, society and culture, from the years of the post-war reconstruction and the economic boom to the present day.

EP.1: Milan by Bicycle, Towards Reconstruction

The 29th Giro d’Italia set off from Milan on 15 June 1946 and returned to the city on 7 July. It was named the “Reconstruction Tour”, for the cyclists were riding along roads still marked by the scars of war. It is here that Gino “Pacifico” De Crescenzo begins his own journey. As he pedals through the city, he evokes those years of economic and cultural revival, touching on sport, industry, and the emergence of places such as the Piccolo Teatro, an “art theatre for all”. Because, as the Pirelli company newsletter - written by its workers - reminds us, “not even a worker can live by bread alone”.

Ep.2 Beyond the Crisis

Gio Ponti’s Pirelli Tower quickly became a symbol of Milan. To recount the years of the economic boom, Gino “Pacifico” De Crescenzo turns to two photographs - which are striking in the contrast between them - taken by Uliano Lucas and Ugo Mulas right in front of the building. Through his own family story, Pacifico takes us back to 1970s Milan: the years of the oil crisis and car-free Sundays, moments that still echo in today’s reflections on environmental sustainability.

Ep.3 The Metropolis, Design, and the Planet

Pacifico continues his ride through Milan, stopping at the ADI Museum, home to the archives of the prestigious Compasso d’Oro design award. The prize celebrates everything from large appliances, cars and boats to the signage of the Milan metro. It also honours small objects that have changed our concept of creativity and educated entire generations. These include Bruno Munari’s foam rubber Zizì monkey - created by a designer who began working with Pirelli back in the 1940s. Through Munari and the Argentine designer Tómas Maldonado, the episode once again has us reflect on sustainability, innovation and inclusiveness in today’s corporate culture.

Ep.4 Sounds and Rhythms of Factories and Cities

Pacifico brings his bicycle ride through Milan to a close with a reflection on contemporary corporate culture and the ways in which work, cities, and above all factories have evolved. In a conversation with the Pirelli Foundation director Antonio Calabrò and Maestro Salvatore Accardo, he begins with the Canto della Fabbrica project. Before reaching the station, he follows the invitation to “observe the Pirellone from below”, an exhortation written by the author Dino Buzzati in his article “Piccole storie dal grattacielo” (“Small Stories from the Tower”).
