Nazim Hikmet
Nazim Hikmet was born in Thessaloniki on 15 January 1902 and died in Moscow on 3 June 1963. Forced into exile during the Turkish War of Independence, he took refuge in Russia, where he championed socialist ideals. Back in Turkey, he spent many years in prison for his political commitment, which also characterises his poetry, and has been defined as a “romantic communist” or “romantic revolutionary”.
