The Words of Sport

How many words and phrases from the world of sport do we use in our everyday language? There are countless technical terms, neologisms, loans from other languages, and expressions that have come to us from the world of sport. Thanks to radio and television, but also to newspapers and literature, they have gradually entered our everyday speech. Drawing from images, films, and pages of books and magazines now in the Pirelli Historical Archive, we will explore the origins and meanings of some of these terms while following thrilling sporting events on roads, circuits, land and sea. From cycling to sailing, Formula 1 to football, the boys and girls will use archive documents to write and illustrate a short story about a competitive event, aiming to capture and express the core values of sport.

The course will be held over two online sessions via the Microsoft Teams platform and is open to a maximum of two classes together.

History in Focus

The Pirelli Foundation has a vast collection of photographic and audio-visual materials, including thousands of photographs—glass plates, film, paper prints, and slides—taken by renowned photographers such as Ugo Mulas and Federico Patellani, as well as works from important agencies. Additionally, the Archive is home to hundreds of movies, from the early twentieth century to the present day, on both film and magnetic tape. Together, we will practise observing and studying these sources to revisit key moments in the history of the company and of Italy, reflecting on changes in taste, customs, and the architectural evolution of our cities, as well as new forms of mobility and travel. Through interactive games and quizzes, we’ll pay special attention to observing both still and moving images that illustrate Pirelli’s close ties with sport. We’ll explore the athletic feats and unexpected triumphs, and the intense efforts they involve, along with still images of cyclists, drivers and riders racing on roads and tracks across the world.

The session will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.

Animals in the Archive

Dogs, chicks, fawns, fish, and even lions and elephants—what are all these animals doing in the Pirelli Historical Archive? From soft rubber toys shaped like sheep and squirrels to articulated foam rubber cats, and even foxes and roosters starred in attractive advertising campaigns. Let’s have fun discovering how and why artists and designers over the past 150 years of Pirelli’s history have decided to make animal-objects and use them for advertisements to express their imagination and creativity. Together, we’ll examine original advertising materials and then try our hand at designing our own animal-inspired advertisements.

The session will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.

Tell Me a Story

A 1950s racing tyre, a promotional postcard of a football from the early 1900s, a pair of red high-heeled shoes from the late twentieth century, tennis balls from the 1970s—each of these objects tells us a story and gives us a lot of information about both our past and our present. Join us as we explore the various rooms of the Pirelli Foundation, where vintage photographs and drawings, models of futuristic sailing boats, and coloured Formula 1 tyres reveal thrilling tales of sportspeople, riders and navigators, climbers and athletes. With their courage and urge to succeed, they have taken on the most remarkable challenges. Stories of passion, loyalty, friendship and great teamwork. With paper, pencils and stickers, we’ll take note of what objects and documents can tell us and we’ll create our own book of memories.

The meeting will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.
