A heritage to be discovered, with an eye to the future

Pirelli, a century and a half of company stories

How can a company like Pirelli, with a history going back over 150 years, continue to innovate and consolidate its identity? First of all, by fully understanding its own cultural heritage, which combines science and humanism in almost 4 kilometres of documents protected by the Archival Superintendency of the Lombardy Region, and by promoting its heritage through research, publications, digital projects, exhibitions, events and a whole range of other activities. This is the mission of the Pirelli Foundation.

Meeting
A guided tour of the rooms of the Pirelli Foundation, where the exhibition Pirelli, When History Builds the Future is currently on display, and of the Historical Archive, will introduce the students to the company’s corporate culture, which owes its origins to the intuition of the young engineer Giovanni Battista Pirelli. With video installations and digital displays, we will find out how Pirelli’s research started out in the world of racing and then moved onto roads the world over, with products designed for mass mobility.

Travelling with Words

Stories along the roads of the world

Pirelli has been bringing a passion for books into the workplace for almost a century, ever since the first company library was set up in 1928. This tradition is still very much alive thanks to the work of the libraries at the Pirelli Headquarters in Milano Bicocca and at the factories in Bollate and Settimo Torinese. There are also lots of activities to promote reading among the young, including the Premio Campiello Junior, which is now in its second edition. Meeting

We will travel to faraway places with our imagination, in words and images, through the stories that were told in Pirelli magazine, by some of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. We will form teams and have fun with a quiz on children’s literature and we’ll read excerpts from two of the three finalist books of the Premio Campiello Junior: we’ll set sail with Nicolò on the motor vessel Europa as in Chiara Carminati’s book Un pinguino a Trieste and we’ll find out about Matteo and Aziz’s journey as told by Antonella Sbuelz in the winning work, Questa notte non torno.

Description of the practical activity

Taking inspiration from the readings carried out together, the children will create a postcard to send to their family or friends. It will illustrate their imaginary journey and tell of their adventures, with drawings of the places they would like to see.

The course will take place entirely online and will be in the form of a meeting

Rubber for All Seasons

Pirelli, a century and a half of research into innovative materials

In 1872, Giovanni Battista Pirelli, the founder of the company, decided that he would be the first to produce rubber articles in Italy. Rubber, which still today is obtained from trees, meaning that is it renewable by nature, is one of the raw materials studied at Pirelli's research laboratories with a view to producing increasingly sustainable tyres.

Meeting
Through historical and contemporary photographs, original artists' sketches, videos and multimedia installations, the children will find out about a company with a history dating back over 150 years and yet with an eye always on the future. From the first factory in Milan to modern plants across the world manufacturing tyres for bicycles, motorcycles and cars.

Description of the practical activity
While filling in their personal "travel diaries", the young visitors will be guided through the rooms of the Pirelli Foundation, the company's Historical Archive and the temporary exhibitions, and they will record their journey with drawings and keywords, as well as solving amusing puzzles.

From Track to Road

Pirelli, a century and a half of racing

At Pirelli, experimentation to improve tyre production has always been closely linked to the world of sport, from cycling and motorcycle racing to rallying and Formula 1. The use of racetracks to push tyres to the most extreme limits and to innovate the company’s technology has always been globally recognised in the field of road safety and sustainability. Let’s find out about it together.

Meeting
The students will visit the Pirelli Foundation, where the company’s Historical Archive is kept and where they will see the new exhibition Pirelli, When History Builds the Future. Here they will learn about the evolution of a multinational company that is about to be over 150 years old, with its eye firmly on the future.
They will be assisted as they examine photographs, audio-visuals and stories from the historic Pirelli magazine, finding out about the champions of the most famous road races. A look at the work currently being carried out by engineers in the digital factories of Industry 4.0 will show how a tyre is designed, tested in the laboratories and on the tracks, and finally produced in Pirelli’s most advanced technological centres.

Description of the practical activity
The children will be divided into groups and asked to work together to build a robot that can compete with those made by the other teams in the class. This assisted activity aims to create a team spirit and introduce the children to the world of robotics.

Out and About in Milan

Pirelli, a century and a half of places to discover

Milan is famous for some of its architectural symbols, from its magnificent Cathedral to its Central Station, where travellers come and go. The development and transformation of some parts of Milan also reveal the close bond between Pirelli and the city. Together we will explore the Pirellone and the company’s current headquarters, with the Pirelli Foundation building and the fifteenth-century Bicocca degli Arcimboldi residence, and we will pass by the La Scala opera house, the home of world opera, and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, the first permanent public theatre in Italy.

Meeting
We will imagine we’re walking through the streets of Milan and discovering its theatres, its skyscrapers, its centres of learning, research and production, in both past and present.

Description of the practical activity
We will create a coloured map so we can find our way around this great city. Each child will discover and depict its most important buildings and will try to imagine the urban landscapes of tomorrow, designing new buildings for an increasingly sustainable future.

The course will take place entirely online and will be in the form of a meeting.

Let’s Write a Film Script!

Stories of the company on film

The Pirelli Foundation was set up with the aim of preserving the company's historical archive, which includes documents, photographs, drawings and posters, films, and a library.  The institution promotes Pirelli's corporate culture through activities that also include promoting a love of reading, at the workplace and among the young. With this goal in mind, a partnership was set up with the Fondazione Il Campiello to launch the Premio Campiello Junior, now in its second edition.

Meeting

We will read together some excerpts concerning the world of cinema taken from Pirelli magazine, written by some of the most important writers of the twentieth century. And we will relive the adventures of Marcel, the gardener and assistant to the Lumière brothers in the book La scatola dei sogni  by the authors Quarzo and Vivarelli, who were one of the three finalists in the first edition of the Premio Campiello Junior. To put their passion for reading to the test, the children will take part in team quizzes.

Description of the practical activity

The students will be invited to write a short scene for a film starring the young Marcel  of La scatola dei sogni, in an event they themselves will make up.

The course will consist of two online meetings.

Going Fast Takes Time

Pirelli, a century and a half of research into innovative materials “Even what seems the same to the eyes and heart is now profoundly different inside”: this is how one of the installations at the new Pirelli Foundation exhibition projects us into the world of tyres. A “round black object" that may look simple, but that actually reveals a very long process of research and development in terms of sustainability. Sections of the course 1. We will find out about Pirelli's overriding commitment to sustainability, and its constant effort to protect the environment: from the creation of virtual prototypes, to the study of the best raw materials, recycled or from renewable sources, through to the factory production in 2021 of the world's first tyre to be awarded FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. Suggestions will be given at the end of the meeting on how to organise the practical activities that the students will be able to carry out on their own, in groups. 2. The students will show their works, before final considerations and the end of the course. Description of the practical activity The students will be assisted as they work on a photographic project that helps them reflect on the fundamental role that we all play in protecting our planet. They will be asked to take pictures of everyday life that, in their view, show responsible actions that aim to achieve the sustainable development goals set out in the United Nations 2030 agenda, which is supported by Pirelli. The course will consist of two meetings and will be carried out online.
