Style and Power

Pirelli has always been a trailblazer in visual communication and creativity. One iconic moment in advertising history was the striking image of the Olympic champion Carl Lewis at the starting blocks, wearing red high-heel shoes, photographed by Annie Leibovitz in 1994. However, even in its early years, Pirelli worked with famous artists, illustrators, and graphic designers, who helped shape what is now recognised as the “Pirelli style”. This visual journey takes us through the company’s finest and most iconic advertising campaigns, with a special focus on those highlighting Pirelli’s constant commitment to the world of sports. We will look at sketches, posters, brochures and newspaper inserts, as well as television and cinema commercials, all the way to modern digital campaigns that convey the essence of speed, passion, safety, teamwork, and performance. Divided into groups, the boys and girls will test their newfound knowledge through games and quizzes. Drawing inspiration from the Historical Archive, they will then be assisted as they create their own advertising campaign to show off the strong relationship between Pirelli and the values of the sports world.

The course will consist of four sessions and may be carried out entirely online or it may include a visit to the Pirelli Foundation, to be agreed upon subject to availability.

Sport In Research and Teamwork

Sport can sometimes seem like a display of extreme individualism. In actual fact, it is anything but, for behind every victory there is a dedicated team working together to achieve success. This is especially true in Formula 1 and other motorsport championships where Pirelli acts as a technical partner. From the development of tyres, which require meticulous technical and experimental studies, to the continuous interaction between technicians, engineers, and racing teams, teamwork is essential. Both before and after a race, this dialogue ensures the tyres are used optimally, maximising their performance. The students will be accompanied through the rooms of the Pirelli Foundation, where they will find stories of challenges and victories that have been made possible by Pirelli since the early twentieth century. A visit to the company’s Research & Development laboratories in Milano Bicocca will give them a unique opportunity to witness key stages in tyre design, from the creation of virtual models to the testing of physical prototypes. This complex process ensures the development of tyres that are safer, more high-performing, and increasingly sustainable for roads and tracks across the world.

The session will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class of adult students (18+).

On The Roads of Innovation

Innovation is a key factor in the success of any company. Behind improvements in quality, efficiency, or added value, there are often bold ideas from individuals or teams, along with research and experimentation in new solutions. Throughout this course, students will explore the major innovations introduced by Pirelli during its 150-year history, using archive materials as a lens to understand this journey. From designing elegant and functional objects to experimenting with new materials, and from pioneering technological advancements to shaping new forms of communication, Pirelli’s impact is vast. We will pay particular attention to how Pirelli’s involvement in sports competitions, and especially motorsports like Formula 1, has been a driving force behind its research and development for new products and technologies, with an increasing emphasis on reducing environmental impact. At the end of the course, the participants will be divided into groups and tasked with designing and creating a digital narrative with key insights gleaned from their learning experience.

The course will consist of four sessions and may be carried out entirely online or it may include a visit to the Pirelli Foundation, to be agreed upon subject to availability.

Teams: Ready, Steady, Go!

An exciting journey will take the kids through the Pirelli Foundation’s Historical Archive and its new exhibition to find out about the close connection between the company and the world of sport. Since Pirelli first participated in two- and four-wheel races in the early twentieth century, competitions have played a central role in the Group’s technological advancements. Today, motor racing championships like Formula 1, where Pirelli serves as a technical partner, continue to be a key test bed for trying out new materials and innovative solutions, which often find their way into mass production. To understand how technology can significantly enhance the thrill of the most spectacular sports, and to appreciate the value of teamwork, the kids will find out about some of the most exciting stories of sporting triumphs. Divided into teams, they will then compete with each other by constructing and programming a small robot. The competition will be part of a multi-stage course, where the most technologically advanced and cohesive team will emerge victorious.

The session will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.

The Words of Sport

How many words and phrases from the world of sport do we use in our everyday language? There are countless technical terms, neologisms, loans from other languages, and expressions that have come to us from the world of sport. Thanks to radio and television, but also to newspapers and literature, they have gradually entered our everyday speech. Drawing from images, films, and pages of books and magazines now in the Pirelli Historical Archive, we will explore the origins and meanings of some of these terms while following thrilling sporting events on roads, circuits, land and sea. From cycling to sailing, Formula 1 to football, the boys and girls will use archive documents to write and illustrate a short story about a competitive event, aiming to capture and express the core values of sport.

The course will be held over two online sessions via the Microsoft Teams platform and is open to a maximum of two classes together.

History in Focus

The Pirelli Foundation has a vast collection of photographic and audio-visual materials, including thousands of photographs—glass plates, film, paper prints, and slides—taken by renowned photographers such as Ugo Mulas and Federico Patellani, as well as works from important agencies. Additionally, the Archive is home to hundreds of movies, from the early twentieth century to the present day, on both film and magnetic tape. Together, we will practise observing and studying these sources to revisit key moments in the history of the company and of Italy, reflecting on changes in taste, customs, and the architectural evolution of our cities, as well as new forms of mobility and travel. Through interactive games and quizzes, we’ll pay special attention to observing both still and moving images that illustrate Pirelli’s close ties with sport. We’ll explore the athletic feats and unexpected triumphs, and the intense efforts they involve, along with still images of cyclists, drivers and riders racing on roads and tracks across the world.

The session will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.

The Fantastic Journey of Rubber

Natural rubber plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in the production of tyres. It is ductile, elastic, waterproof, durable, and insulating... rubber has a truly wide range of useful properties! But many people don’t realise that this valuable material is derived from the bark of a tree. So, how is rubber extracted, and how many things can we make with it? Who first discovered the unique qualities of this renewable and biodegradable material? And how can we use rubber in today’s world, in a way that respects both the environment and the people involved in its production? We’ll embark on an incredible journey together, tracing the path of rubber from the forests of Central America to the vast plantations in Asia, and then on to England and finally to Italy. Here we’ll find a young, visionary engineer who, in 1872, founded Italy’s first rubber goods factory. This is a journey through time and across continents, filled with adventure and amazing discoveries.

The session will be held online via Microsoft Teams and is open to a maximum of two classes at a time.

Tell Me a Story

A 1950s racing tyre, a promotional postcard of a football from the early 1900s, a pair of red high-heeled shoes from the late twentieth century, tennis balls from the 1970s—each of these objects tells us a story and gives us a lot of information about both our past and our present. Join us as we explore the various rooms of the Pirelli Foundation, where vintage photographs and drawings, models of futuristic sailing boats, and coloured Formula 1 tyres reveal thrilling tales of sportspeople, riders and navigators, climbers and athletes. With their courage and urge to succeed, they have taken on the most remarkable challenges. Stories of passion, loyalty, friendship and great teamwork. With paper, pencils and stickers, we’ll take note of what objects and documents can tell us and we’ll create our own book of memories.

The meeting will take place in person at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.
