We Are Culture

With Pirelli We Learn to... ADD VALUE

A whole series of activities contribute to raising the level of knowledge and conservation of our cultural heritage, making it more easily available to the public, in order to convey the values that this heritage brings with it. The Pirelli Foundation adopts many approaches to promoting and improving its rich corporate heritage, which consists of more than 4 km of documents, telling a story that has never ceased to represent it corporate culture since 1872.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
The students will be taken on a guided tour of the Pirelli Historical Archive, where they will find a vast array of diverse types of documents. These include the company’s articles of association, technical specifications that chart the evolution of technologies and products, photographs of the first workers at the factory, sketches for iconic advertising campaigns, illustrated catalogues, price lists, company magazines, financial reports, printed advertisements, and lots more. Reading some of these materials and a visit to the exhibition Pirelli: When History Builds the Future, with video installations and digital displays, will introduce the students to the past and present of the great multinational corporation that is Pirelli. The students will also watch the short film We are, a Pirelli Foundation project inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s The Life of Galileo. This film employs a visual narrative to highlight the unique combination of scientific and artistic creativity that is such a feature of the company’s corporate culture. We Are serves as a starting point for discussing the countless initiatives and projects undertaken by the Pirelli Foundation, which promote and show the general public many aspects of the world of Pirelli, such as the digitisation of the materials, research, exhibitions, podcasts, and publications, just to name a few. The group will then be accompanied around the Bicocca area in Milan, where Pirelli has operated since the early twentieth century and where its headquarters is now based.

OBJECTIVES
The primary aim of this activity is to enable the students to observe and examine original materials, and to give them an idea of the wealth and variety of the world of archives. They will also investigate various means for promoting and enhancing cultural heritage, with the aim of breathing life into historical memory and fostering a more informed and conscientious civic and moral awareness. Thanks also to the visit to the Bicocca district, the participants will also learn about the main events in the history of the company.

This course will be in the form of one in-person event.

Nature, Calculation and Fantasy

With Pirelli We Learn to... PRODUCE

Tyres are the result of tireless theoretical and experimental work carried out every day by Pirelli engineers and technicians. The course takes the students on a fascinating journey through history, looking at the various phases of tyre design and production, from the first patents for bicycles in the late nineteenth century to the very latest virtual modelling.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
Pirelli began manufacturing bicycle tyres in 1890. A few years later, it started producing tyres for motorcycles and the first patent for automobiles was granted in 1901. Tyres have undergone profound transformations since then, as the result of continuous research and experimentation. In this guided tour, the students will explore Pirelli’s Historical Archive, with its drawings, technical specifications, and video installations illustrating the technological evolution of tyres. They will learn about the processes used to design and create innovative, environmentally friendly, safe, and high-performance products. Finally, they will visit Pirelli’s Research and Development laboratories, where tests are conducted on physical prototypes and where a static simulator is used for virtual prototypes. These lay the groundwork for tyres for sports cars, Formula 1, production models and bicycles.

OBJECTIVES
The aim is to find out about the development of the first Italian manufacturer of rubber objects and to understand the complexities involved in developing a tyre, from the selection of sustainable raw materials to its production by Industry 4.0. The students will see the importance of experimentation for the creation of cutting-edge processes and products.

Tyres in Your Headphones. Stories of Innovation

With Pirelli We Learn to... INNOVATE

Innovation requires the ability to introduce changes with the aim of obtaining significant improvements in terms of efficiency, quality or added value. Throughout its long history, Pirelli has always tried to anticipate the future through its constant research into new processes and products. The real challenge today, however, is to reconcile technological innovation and sustainability.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
Since 1872 Pirelli has introduced great scientific and technological innovations brought about by the commitment of thousands of people who work every day in the Research and Development laboratories around Italy and in the various company subsidiaries across the world. By examining historical and contemporary documents, images and videos, the students will explore Pirelli’s technological development, from the introduction of recycled and non-fossil ingredients for the creation of its compounds, to the virtualisation of tyres. After analysing the various stages involved in creating a podcast, they will then be helped to conceive, design, draft and record an episode of their own that highlights key innovations in tyre production, including renewable materials, innovative designs, process efficiency, and reduced consumption, from the Cinturato to the Elect range, to Cyber Tyre technology and the PZero E tyre, a champion of technology and sustainability.

OBJECTIVES
The course will explain the value of innovation, which calls for the introduction of new technologies but also for attention to be paid to the environment and people, as well as the ability to predict future scenarios. In their group work, the students will improve their ability to understand information and critically research sources, and they will plan and test their expressive skills with a fair dose of imagination and courage.

The course will consist of three or four sessions and may be carried out entirely online or it may include a visit to the Pirelli Foundation, to be agreed upon, subject to availability.

The Factory in Your Headphones. Stories of People and Ideas

With Pirelli We Learn to... IMAGINE

The evolution of a company brings with it a story of new ideas, of people and a capacity for innovation. All these factors have made Pirelli one of the greatest drivers of change in the Italian and global industrial landscape. A corporate culture that combines science and humanism.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
The history of Pirelli is that of one of the longest-lived multinational corporations in Italy. Founded in Milan in 1872 as the result of a brilliant idea by Giovanni Battista Pirelli, a young graduate from the Politecnico University of Milan, it now works in 12 countries with 18 production plants. By reading and viewing the vast documentary heritage preserved at the Pirelli Foundation, we will analyse the main events in the development of the company, in terms of its production and organisation. We will focus on the key figures who masterminded the great changes that have transformed Pirelli throughout its history and on those whose stories are closely intertwined with the company’s successes. These include Giovanni Battista Pirelli and Leopoldo Pirelli, the engineer Luigi Emanueli and the architect and designer Gio Ponti, the patriot Teresa Berra Kramer and the racing driver Lella Lombardi, the artist Bruno Munari and the poet-engineer Leonardo Sinisgalli, the chemist Giulio Natta and the graphic designer Bob Noorda, to name but a few. Listening to the Risuona podcasts produced by Chora Media and promoted by the Pirelli Foundation, which weave together sounds, stories and personal testimonies of business culture, the students will be encouraged to reflect on the past and present of the world of work. These sources will help inspire them to create a podcast of their own dedicated to one of the great names in Pirelli’s technological and cultural development.

Design in Your Headphones. Stories of Objects and Creativity

With Pirelli We Learn to... PLAN

Design is the blueprint that underpins all the things we have around us. Design seeks to address human needs through functional and creative solutions. Throughout its 150-year history, Pirelli has worked, and still works, with the great masters of industrial design to conceive and produce innovative objects that push the boundaries of design in terms of form, function, and materials.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
The course retraces the dynamic interaction between Pirelli and the industrial designers whose creations have come to epitomise elegance and innovation. We will discover the design processes and technical features of various objects, such as the Cinturato tyre, whose tread design caught the imagination of the brilliant artist Salvador Dalí, and the rubber floors used by Bob Noorda and Franco Albini for the Milan metro. We will see the information panels that soon appeared in stations and airports across the world, as well as in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York. And then, of course, there will be the soft, flexible Zizì monkey, the brainchild of Bruno Munari, winner of the first edition of the Compasso d’Oro award. In more recent times, we come to the Rubber Soul exhibition and the publishing projects Advertising with a Capital P and Skyscraper Stories curated by the Pirelli Foundation. The students will draw inspiration from these stories and from the podcast Risuona, which is produced by Chora Media and promoted by the Pirelli Foundation, to create a podcast that, in an effective and engaging way, narrates the creation of beautiful and functional objects that have been made in Italy.

OBJECTIVES
The aim is to raise awareness of design culture, highlighting the importance of the various phases of the process, from concept to factory production, in order to draw on the work of the great masters. This will help the students use their own imagination in order to find new solutions and respond to new needs and requests. In their group work, the students will improve their ability to understand information and critically research sources, and they will plan and test their expressive skills, bringing to bear a fair dose of imagination and courage.

The course will consist of three or four sessions and may be carried out entirely online or it may include a visit to the Pirelli Foundation, to be agreed upon, subject to availability.

Snapshots of Reality

With Pirelli We Learn to... SEARCH

A company’s historical archive is a treasure trove that can help us unlock the secrets of the past, and that can inspire us to improve our present, and shape our future- Every document and image, when scrutinised and compared with other sources, becomes a story waiting to be told.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
We will explore the online pages of the Pirelli Historical Archive with its letters, posters, magazines, films and project designs. And, in particular, we shall delve into the photographic archive: hundreds of thousands of shots in the form of negatives, prints and slides that show us factories, trade fairs, products, people at work and machinery, sporting events and much more besides. The students will work in groups, observing and analysing both older and more recent photographs. Their task will be to form groups and conduct historical research and convey, in their own words and with sound recordings, the “fragments of reality” that have been captured by the photographer’s lens.

OBJECTIVES
This course aims to introduce students to the concept of historical archives and the importance of preserving collective memory. They will also learn to recognise the various types of documents and to search sources in order to carry out scientifically based research online. In particular, they will improve their ability to interpret a photograph and use it as evidence to investigate and understand historical phenomena.

Look Up, Write Down

With Pirelli We Learn... STORYTELLING

Pirelli places a strong emphasis on the joy of reading and on its importance for learning. The Pirelli Foundation actively supports a number of initiatives to promote books, such as the opening of libraries for employees and their families at its Milan headquarters and at its factories in Bollate and Settimo Torinese. Another is the Premio Campiello Junior, a literature and poetry competition for young people, organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Il Campiello. The aim of the event is to promote a love of literature among the young.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
One way to inspire others to read is through book reviews. The students will explore some of the great stories featured in Pirelli magazine, dating from 1948 to 1972, and in the current Pirelli World magazine, written by renowned Italian and international writers. They will also read excerpts from works nominated for the Premio Campiello to learn the art of book and story reviews, using both traditional approaches and the latest digital methods. Like true book bloggers, they will then try their hand at creating a short video, summarising and providing their personal commentary to inform and captivate.

OBJECTIVES
This course aims to foster a passion for reading among the young, introducing them to new authors and literary forms linked to the world of business. The students will also be able to improve their recapitulation, writing and communication skills.

The course will consist of two meetings. It will be possible to agree to have the event entirely online or to have the first of the two events in person, depending on availability.

More than just round and black

With Pirelli We Learn to... RESPECT

At first glance, tyres might seem all the same, just round, black objects that have remained pretty well the same forever. In actual fact, they are highly complex products that require from extensive and skilful research and development. And they require a deep commitment to sustainability, which starts in distant tropical forests and extends to the most modern factories worldwide. Countless technological advances have been made since the late nineteenth century, when rubber was first used to cover wheels for bicycles, motorcycles and carriages and later cars, providing us with greater comfort and mobility.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
We’ll let words, images and sounds take us on a journey inside the tyre. Quizzes and games will help us follow the various stages involved in making tyres, in increasingly clean, eco-friendly factories. We’ll find out about the ingredients, from vegetable oils to rice husk, the geometric designs engraved on the surface, known as the tread, and the secrets that make Pirelli tyres increasingly safe, innovative and environmentally conscious. Like this, we shall see how well-directed technological innovation can be crucial for sustainable development.

OBJECTIVES
The children will learn about the various stages involved in making a tyre, from the raw materials to the finished product. They will also learn about how important it is for businesses, society and individuals to adopt new strategies that respect the environment.

This program will be conducted in a single meeting, either online or in-person, based on availability.
