Stories of Graphics and Design

Pirelli, a century and a half of corporate communication Going back over the most iconic advertising campaigns to investigate the intense, constant interaction between the company and the graphic artists and designers who helped create the distinctive Pirelli style. The workshop explores and retraces the development of Pirelli’s visual communication. From the artistic advertisements of the early twentieth century to the creations of the great names of Italian and international graphic design in the 1950s and 1960s, through to the global campaigns of the 1990s and the latest graphic productions. Images, videos, logos, slogans and new lettering but also objects produced by the Pirelli factories thanks to its highly qualified partnerships with the great masters of industrial design. The course will be held entirely online and will consist of one or more meetings, depending on the needs of the teachers and students.

Business in the Photographer’s Lens

Pirelli, a century and a half of corporate photography A workshop to investigate the close bond between photography and business by directly viewing the rich variety of photographic treasures at the Pirelli Foundation. Buildings, products, people, services, and events immortalised by photographers working at the turn of the twentieth century, such as Luca Comerio and Vincenzo Aragozzini, through to the great names of contemporary photography who have created the Pirelli Calendar, by way of masters such as Ugo Mulas, Federico Patellani, Aldo Ballo, and Arno Hammacher, whose works bear witness to the profound transformations of Italy in the post-war period. Reflecting on the relationship between documentation and artistic creation, the students will also be able to learn about the conservation, management and promotion criteria adopted by the Pirelli Foundation.   The course will be held entirely online and will consist of one or more meetings, depending on the needs of the teachers and students.

Beyond the Product

Product communication or corporate communication? Two distinct yet complementary strategies that have always coexisted in a company’s narrative. By analysing the section of the Pirelli Historical Archive dedicated to visual communication, this workshop offers a structured educational programme, enriched with games and quizzes, to explore the features of corporate advertising—communication designed to build and strengthen a company’s public image. Sketches, print layouts, posters, trade-fair stands, and corporate identity manuals created by leading graphic designers will illustrate the values on which Pirelli has built its identity: global reach, sustainability, sports partnerships, and a commitment to social and cultural growth in the communities where it operates. A central role is given to the study of modern graphic design, in particular the use of the Pirelli logo with the “Long P”. Applied in original and innovative ways—through projections, superimpositions, and duplications—it serves to reinforce a strong and coherent image, contributing to the creation of brand recognition and thus to immediate identification around the world. Through direct engagement with archive materials, the students will take part in a project activity: to design a project or a multimedia installation for an exhibition space with the aim of communicating a contemporary corporate message in an effective manner, taking inspiration from the values explored during the workshop. The programme is divided into three or four sessions and can be carried out entirely online via Microsoft Teams, or it may include a visit to the Pirelli Foundation, to be agreed upon subject to availability.
