A Rubber Menagerie

Are we in an archive or a zoo? Hidden among the shelves and drawers of the Pirelli Historical Archive you might find all sorts of creatures: roosters, foxes, monkeys, even lions and salamanders. Some are drawn, some are made of rubber – and all are waiting to be discovered. In this workshop, we’ll hunt them down together, just like a real treasure hunt. These aren’t just soft toys born from the imagination of artists such as Bruno Munari. They are also the animals chosen by graphic artists and designers – including Armando Testa, Eliodoro Ximenes, and Ezio Bonini – as the stars of sketches and advertising posters. Their job? To explain, in a fun and eye-catching way, the qualities of a product like a tyre. After exploring some of these colourful campaigns, the children can have a go at creating their own advert… inspired, of course, by the animal kingdom!

The workshop will be held at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one or two classes.

Racing Toward a Sustainable Future

Speed is the soul of sport, but behind every curve, every overtaking move, and every finish line lies far more than just a powerful engine. There is research, engineering, passion, and – today more than ever – care for the environment. Through historical documents and a visit to the exhibition L’Officina dello Sport, the students will discover the long and meticulous work behind the creation of a tyre, and how technology makes it safer, more efficient, and increasingly sustainable. The programme addresses issues such as environmental and social sustainability, beginning with the world of two- and four-wheel racing: from the responsible selection of raw materials to the use of renewable energy and recycled materials. Even the most adrenaline-fuelled competitions, such as Formula 1, are becoming testbeds for green innovation. Modern tyres are not only high-performance, but also designed to reduce environmental impact.

Working in teams, the students will design and program a Formula 1 model capable of racing on a circuit filled with unexpected obstacles – just like the challenges we face when creating a more just, responsible, and sustainable world.

The session will take place at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.

The Amazing Journey of Rubber

Natural rubber plays a crucial and irreplaceable role in the production of tyres. Flexible, elastic, waterproof, durable, insulating… its qualities are countless. But many people don’t realise that this valuable material is derived from the bark of a tree. How is it collected, and what can be made from it? Who first uncovered the secrets of this renewable and biodegradable substance? And how can we use it today with respect for the environment and for the people involved in its production? Let’s embark on an incredible journey together, tracing the path of rubber from the forests of Central America to the vast plantations in Asia, and then on to England and finally to Italy. Here we’ll find a young, visionary engineer who, in 1872, founded Italy’s first rubber goods factory. This is a journey through time and across continents, filled with adventure and remarkable discoveries.

The meeting takes place online via the Microsoft Teams platform and is intended for one class.

Beyond Speed

Speed, performance, competition: these are the words most often linked with sport. Yet behind every success lies a long process of discipline, patience, and vision. Real innovation does not come fast - it takes time, knowledge, and responsibility. This course invites students to reflect on the relationship between technology and sustainability, and on how the tyre industry is addressing today’s major environmental challenges. A visit to the Pirelli Historical Archive and to the exhibition The Sports Workshop will help the students understand the milestones of technological progress and the crucial role of research over the years.

The students will then reach into the very “heart of innovation” with a visit to Pirelli’s testing laboratories. Here, they will see how tyres—designed for everything from Formula 1 to the daily commute—are designed, tested, and perfected. Special focus will be given to the driving simulator, an advanced digital tool that makes it possible to assess the performance of a tyre in real time.

The course is held in person at the Pirelli Foundation and at the Pirelli Research & Development Centre in Milano Bicocca. It is aimed exclusively at adult classes.

Cities in Motion

How do we move around our cities today? And how was it in the past? In this journey through time, we’ll discover how people’s habits and ways of getting about have changed. Together, we’ll look at photos, videos, and archive documents to see how people travelled years ago – especially in Milan. Imagine the very first bicycles, traffic police directing cars without traffic lights, and the first zebra crossings… all the way to “smart” and “shared” cars and today’s public transport. Then we’ll think about the future: how can we make our cities safer, more beautiful, and easier to live in? With creativity and teamwork, and even a little coding, we’ll try to design new ideas for moving through the city – always thinking about the needs of all its people as well as the environment and the planet.

The session will take place at the Pirelli Foundation and is for one class.

The Power of Data

Companies have always had to deal with numbers, graphs, and statistics, but the importance of data has grown enormously over the years. With the development of new technologies, big data has become a powerful tool for sparking new ideas, guiding important decisions, and imagining the future. This course explores the most important numbers that have marked the company’s history, from its first financial statements to the infographics created for its fiftieth anniversary in 1922. It will then look at how Pirelli today collects, uses, and communicates the great wealth of data at its disposal: from research laboratories to production machinery for making tyres, from Cyber sensors, which are able to “read” the road and “talk” to the driver, to the virtualisation of tyres.

The students will be taken on a fascinating journey through technology, innovation, and numbers, in which data takes centre stage. The participants will put both their creativity and their analytical skills to the test by designing an infographic that communicates data clearly, simply, and effectively.

The programme is divided into three or four sessions and can be carried out entirely online via Microsoft Teams, or it may include a visit to the Pirelli Foundation, to be agreed upon subject to availability.

Stories of Encounters

The history of a company is also a history of remarkable encounters. People from different worlds and from different generations have come together and joined forces, bringing their own unique skills, visions, and passions to transform dialogue into innovation. The course explores the exchanges between entrepreneurs, engineers, architects, designers, and artists who had the courage to imagine and create projects that went on to become known worldwide. For example: the meeting of Giovanni Battista Pirelli and Giuseppe Colombo, which led to the first Italian company to produce rubber goods; Gio Ponti and Pier Luigi Nervi, who together built the Pirelli Tower, for many years the tallest building in Europe; Vitale Bramani, Leopoldo Pirelli, and Franco Brambilla, whose friendship and partnership gave rise to Vibram mountain soles; and the athlete Carl Lewis with the photographer Annie Leibovitz, whose work together led to the famous “Power is nothing without control” advertising campaign.

The class will then be guided in writing an imaginary dialogue between two figures from the past. A creative and thoughtful exercise to give a voice to history, while keeping an eye firmly on the future.

The workshop can be held in person at the Pirelli Foundation for one class (one two-hour session), or online via Microsoft Teams for one or two classes (two one-hour sessions).

Motion Graphics

Pirelli has always had a close bond with sport. Today, it produces tyres for bicycles, motorcycles, and racing cars, but in the past it also created rubber products for swimming, tennis, athletics, and many other sports. The history of Pirelli is a story of passion, technology, and great partnerships, like those with Inter Milan in football and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in sailing. First and foremost, sport is movement, energy, and speed, but it is also balance, control, and safety: values that Pirelli has always shared and expressed through its use of visual communication. During this educational programme, the students will visit the Pirelli Foundation to discover how graphic designers and artists have represented dynamism, strength, and speed in some very different styles and a range of techniques.

The students will be given a close-up look at the work of leading figures in visual communication, and they will then reinterpret these works in a creative way and bring them to life through the stop-motion technique.

The meeting will take place at the Pirelli Foundation and is aimed at one or two classes.
