The year celebrating the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante brings with it the first comic story devoted to him, accompanied by two historical parodies of the Divine Comedy: L’inferno di Topolino by Guido Martina and Angelo Bioletto, and L’inferno di Paperino by Giulio Chierchini. The first of these two parodies was published in 1949-50 and it launched what became a great tradition in Italian Disney publications: over the years, no end of literary classics have been adapted as comic strips starring the most famous mice and ducks in the world. L’inferno di Paperino, the story starring Donald Duck, looks at some of the dominant themes of the 1970s and 1980s, such as that of ecology. The new story dedicated to the Supreme Poet, on the other hand, was created this year by Augusto Macchetto and Giada Perissinotto, with the colours of Andrea Cagol, describing an imaginary episode from Dante’s childhood, as performed by a young Donald Duck. The book is an excellent opportunity to introduce young readers to the work of the greatest Italian poet of all time, but also for comic-book enthusiasts of all ages, who can now reread the historical parodies devoted to him.
