Working. Men, machines, ideas
Seventy shots that illustrate Pirelli factories in Italy and around Europe, in the faces, gestures and sounds of everyday life at work. This is the story of an authentic civilisation of machines that constantly evolves and yet never loses its sense of community in a world of rich social relationships.
In July 2009, when it was already incorporated but still waiting to move into its definitive Milano Bicocca headquarters, the Pirelli Foundation organised the exhibition Working: Men, Machines, Ideas in the Impluvium at the Triennale di Milano.
Carlo Furgeri Gilbert’s photographs told the story of Pirelli factories in Italy and Europe through faces, gestures, and everyday work settings.
The story of a new world of machines, whether those portrayed in the old workshops of a factory about to be renovated or in the aseptic rooms of the plant in Germany, in the faces of women workers in Romania, or in the hands of Turkish workers who know their stuff. An industry undergoing change, of course, but one that has never lost its sense of community and its active social relationships.
